So how many of you are going to quit shooting hw 7?   I know I know, I'm drooling to shoot some of these shells.  But I don't think I can leave my hw7.  It sure would be hard.

The WLB is only available in #5 shot however, where the "Rooster" is available in #4, #5 and #6 shot.

Why has Winchester balked at loading 6's in their 20 ga turkey loads

In a 20 especially.......................... hows about a higher pellet count for better pattern density at distance

The new WLB 20 gauge shells are available with #6 shot. It's the new 2.75" WLB 12 gauge shells that are available with #5 shot only.

One of the more interesting principles in the study of the effect of velocity on spheres is that, put simply, the higher the initial velocity, the more quickly that velocity decreases. Since lead shot is generally in the shape of a sphere, that principle applies to the velocity of shot in those shotshells with lead shot.

When we look at the terminal velocity of shot at 40 yards, with a muzzle velocity of 1000-1090 fps and shot with a muzzle velocity of 1200-1225, they are just about the same. Since the terminal energy is a product of the terminal velocity and the weight of the sphere, shot launched at those muzzle velocities also have very similar terminal energy. The advantage to the lower velocity of the sphere (shot) is that there is less disruption to the medium (air) and the shot flies in a more stable manner.

In my discussions with folks in the field who know a lot more about the physics of shot flight than I do, there also seems to be agreement that there is an advantage to patterning when shot does not have a muzzle velocity that exceeds the speed of sound, 1090 fps, since within 40 yards it will drop below that speed and become even less stable.
