Gobbler Wingbones,Hen Yelpers, And HONEY JARS...

Trying something different for this Fall members instead of the (tired) cupped hands for yelpers and wingbones. After trying alot of different GLASS jars for gobbler yelps and Gobbler clucks--I find that a glass jar of nearly 5 inches in height and 2 1/2 inches wide gives me the (tone), I am looking for---that hollow tone that travels further then using cupped hands. Hen yelpers also work well with the glass.   I save my pill bottles along with hen yelpers for the Spring. The pill bottles give a much sharper zone to help me on crowded public lands. What do members think about the glass jars? This was probably done 50+ years ago.

Not sure if this is exactly what you mean but I have experimented playing yelpers into such objects.  Small jars, bottles, etc, etc to replicate the baffling. You are right it sounds really good! However the sound is being directed straight back at you.  Straight back at your ears.  When I recorded it, it didn't sound the same at all from a different perspective.  I'm sure it would call a turkey at the right time and place but to me it's not projecting the sound properly and it doesn't sound like what you THINK it sounds like.  This is only my opinion based on personal experience so take it for what it's worth.  Interesting topic though.

 You are right-- the sound shoots back. Going to give it a try this Sat on the New  York Fall opener in my area. I am still on a basic flip-phone and have no internet-- so can't really show what the gobbler yelps and gobbler clucks sound like.

I first pooh-poohed your post and then this morning I found a small old salve jar while cleaning out cabinets.  I had a swizzle stick (drink/coffee stirrer) and placed the end in the jar and yelped.  The sound was turkey.  If I find my digital recorder and time, I may give it a try.  It is akin to Kenny Morgan's Turkey Phone that he used when using mouth yelpers with the exception that Morgan's phone was an open tube that projected the sound of the mouth yelper.  Callers that work come from the most accidental circumstances.

Noel Gonzales makes those yelp enhancers too, the ones like Kenny did. Never tried one though, since I very seldom use a mouth call.

The sound does come back at you- so I dont practice much. There is a nice hollow tone for the gobbler yelps though.  It won't be my first choice- but will try it later. I have a (HENRY EDWARDS) box made by ALBERT PAUL that I will use first.
