Question for the masses
June 12, 2016, 11:11:48 AM
So for the last three days I have been batching it with my two boys, my nephew and my oldest boys best friend. Now my oldest boy is in his last year of little league and so is his buddy. They play on rival teams and during supper(fried deer steak, mashed potatoes and gravy) the smack talk was getting pretty heavy. It was all good natured and comical but I decided to take them all to the ball field and let them have at it. After I good round a batting practice to all four we hit the field and first up was home run hitting. Boys I pitched balls for two hours and not a ball went over the fence. The little guys did well but we skewed the odds in their favor. Anyways here's where it gets serious. My boys buddy is an all- star shortstop. He is fast with a pretty good arm but not really a distance thrower. So he was bragging about how many bases he has stolen this year and I had to challenge him to a 50 yard dash. He said bring it old man and we lined up. He had my by about two steps out of the hole but I caught him. It was neck and keck at the finish or so our 7 year line judge says. However upon offering a rematch he enthusiastically shot me down. So then we lined up against the fence for a throw to home plate. He was allowed a to get a running start and throw were I was allowed one step. His was three bounces to the plate were as mine was one hop. Beat him hands down. But then he was criticizing my pitching sayin I had old man arm. Well I decide to pitch serious and struck him out in four pitches. The last being a breaking ball at about 70 mph that he bailed out of the batters box and broke down and in for a strike called by my oldest son from second base. He also is a pitcher. So here's my question. Should I feel good about my performance or not? All I got this morning from him after cooking a breakfast of bacon and eggs was "your a better cook than baseball player old man". Kids these days.

Be proud. I got challenged to a foot race by a 13 year old girl about four years ago when I was 52. She challenged me and her Dad. Her Dad pulled up lame and fell to the ground in serious pain at about the 10 yard mark. But I smoked her by a step. Had to have a rematch, same result. That's when the trash taking started. I told her my claim to fame now was that I out ran a 13 year old speedster girl allstar softball player. One everyone talks about how fast she is. That was when she informed me she was only 12
I'm just glad she didn't get to see me the next two or three days when I had to struggle just to walk.
So be proud, and avoid any future challenges from that young man if possible. You have something over him that he can never get back, unless your foolish enough to agree to any rematches.
That girl is now 16 and challenges me every time I see her. I just tell her I proved my point and I just don't want to embarrass her any further.
If I'm not back in five minutes, wait longer!

I think your right Ronnie. I just about bit off more than I wanted with that young man. I was more of a distance guy even in my prime. Did the mile in 5 min 6 seconds and I walked for a short distance letting a friend catch up. Was middle of the pack when we did the 50.
Was pretty sure that I had enough gas in the tank to beat him on the rematch. Congrats on your victory. Pretty impressive performance on your part. I am a little sore but nothing some ibuprofen didn't fix. I am really getting into this little league ball. Once it gets past college level I lose interest but I am enjoying this more than playing it. Same for girls softball. It seems faster paced and they are playing for pride. No high dollar contacts or whining. Just pride and a love of the game. I can appreciate that.

pretty good there. A little more intense than what we did but still good.
We had a blast this weekend and he just left about a half hour ago. His mom and dad just divorced a short while ago so it's been a little rough for him. He gave me a hug and said thanks and that he hasn't had that much fun in a while but that I really should stick to cooking.
. He is a veryvtalented kid and well mannered as well. It's gonna be fun this summer as I just got the call that my son has been selected to the all star team as well.

Funny story. I once challenged a 70 yr old male coworker to a foot race in our work parking lot. He was always talking about "way back when in track." I figured lets go old man, I was 32. We got to the line and he put his hands on the ground and j thought, oh sh@t. He took off like the Holy Ghost was after him and I eventually caught and tied him. I was the one refusing the rematch.

Hey, spank him while you can! And make it look like it was easy for ya' even if it's killin' ya'!
In all seriousness, it does a soul good to be surprised/beaten...Character builder and a reminder not to be over confident. That kid knew you beat him fair and square. It may be a valuable lesson for him in the future...
Don't read this as being vindictive. It's just one of those life lessons in humility...

I hear ya fellows. I learned a little something too. Namely don't get in a foot race with a kid who's nickname is roadrunner! We had fun which is what it's all about and I like the kids confidence. He is not arrogant and he wouldn't admit defeat but he wasn't claiming victory either. He did slick his feathers down after that which tells me all I need to know. I am gonna call it good and go out on top.
