Im looking to mount one of these to my Beretta 391, Xtrema 2. I do not want to do the speed bead. So I am looking at drilling and taping my receiver. My question is do I have to mount it to a picatinny rail or can the fast fire be mounted straight to the receiver. The only reason why i ask is that I saw a Mossberg that had the fast fire mounted directly on the receiver and I would prefer to do the same.
For those of you that run these sights do you prefer to have them on a picatinny rail or would you mount them to the gun as I have pictured?  Thank you for your help

To mount the Fast Fire like in the picture you posted you will need to use  the Burris base made for the 336 marlin. Then a gunsmith will drill and tap 2 holes in the receiver to match the pattern of that base. This setup will allow the lowest possible mount short of using a speed bead mount. The advantage to this mounting method is it will set low on receiver and line up with your eye better. The disadvantage with this is that it is not as easily removed if it is a dual purpose gun and you want to take it off and on between seasons. With a picatinny or weaver rail you would use the picatinny  mount that comes with the ff3 to attach to the rail. The advantage to that is it is easier to remove if it is a dual purpose gun. Disadvantage  with that is it will set up higher and you may need to raise the comb on the stock to get a good cheek weld. Search through this forum there is a lot of good info on the Fast fire/ 336 mount combo. For a dedicated turkey gun it is hard to beat that setup. Hope this info was of help.
