It's really nice to have a variety of decoys to choose from.  If I'm doing a lot of hiking I would definitely stay away from large, bulky decoys.  It's tough hiking through brush stalking turkeys with a giant load on your back.  Avian X are defininitely go-to decoys when it comes to packability and looking real.  If I only hunted turkeys from ground blinds and it is a short walk to my truck I'd likely go with a super realistic decoy such as DSD's.  It helps having faith in the decoys you set up if sitting for hours upon hours at a time!  As mentioned above, things can change dramatically during certain times of year and even a particular situation (or tom).  Certain postures and decoys may work one day and not the next.  One decoy or set up may work super early in the year and a different decoy/s late in the year after hens start nesting, or in the fall.  It often comes down to what mood the toms are in and figuring out what particular decoy and setup will work when a situation presents itself.  A lot of this is learned from experience but other times may be blind luck.  Decoys may not matter when hunting toms that have no hunting pressure but nothing may work if hunting high pressured birds....you may need to think outside the box!  To answer your question...I prefer a variety of decoys so I have several to choose from in different situations.  If you hunt a smart ole tom with the same decoy and set up every day for a week he likely won't be too terribly impressed!

thanks guys for your thoughts...i have 2 dsd feeders and 1 alert(which i normally use on the ground

in the breeder/submissive position) what got me thinkn is i orderd a DECEPTION jake and after lookn

at its LOOKS, in noticed the POSITION he is in, differant then the avainX and dsd jake.....hope i didnt make

I have a couple of Delta decoys (by Hunters Specialties) that I bought in the late 90's which have worked well when I've used them. The hen is in the feeding position and turkeys tend to ignore her for the most part.  The jake is in a relaxed, non-threatening pose, but that hasn't stopped a lot of gobblers from attacking & stomping his rubber @$$.  I have never seen a gobbler shy away or negatively react to them.  They're not as fancy as the decoys they make these days, though they were much less expensive.  I've added some acrylic paint and ink from sharpie pens to make them look more realistic than they were new.

My very first jake decoy I bought was one of those ugly Foam decoys never got a chance to get a turkey over it, but to beef up the body of it I bought another foam decoy cut the head off and glued it on over the jake decoy will take a pic and post tomorrow cost me around 15$ to make and will do the job too.

piss off a few of the gobblers in my area, will keep in touch with you all and let you know how he

does....will be sitn him somewhat over my dsd hen in the submissive position, fingers are crossd,
