Mouth call Suggestion
March 15, 2016, 02:29:40 PM
Looking for ideas for a new mouth call that isn't really raspy. I have several diaphragms that sound great but they're all raspy. What do you guys use to get the clearer sounding yelps?
Thanks

I use a lot of Quaker boy mouth calls. I generally like a raspy call earlier in the season and use their Pro triple a lot. Later on I'll use the clearer Twin ll more.

For me a ghost cut, like a 2 or 2.5 reed, can blow clean or a little raspy. I think there is a lot of difference between "rasp" and being "muddy". I personally have a tough time getting "rasp" out of say the average 3 reed V cut call. It just gets "muddy" on the back end. ..even if I stack that top reed without any overhang. Just to much latex hanging there for me.
I like a modified V cut, with clipped wings. Just a lighter call, I get the true rasp I like from that, and I also can get cleaner on it if I want.
A no-cut call will not have any rasp, that may be what you are looking for?
Mark
Edit to say, a lot of guys like that heavy, "muddy" sound, so Im not saying its wrong in any way, just preference.

I have a Gene's double reed that isn't raspy.

The Gooserbat "Classic Hen" is a very clean sounding call, and easy to play

Thanks for the replies so far. I guess its all in how you use them. The few batwing and ghost cuts that I currently own seem to be a lot raspier than the V-cuts that I use. Its probably just the way that I use them, but I'm not really sure what to change while using them.

Mess around with the amount of tongue pressure, and where you apply the pressure you use when calling. Raising the middle part of your tongue tighter on the call, dropping your jaw slightly at the rollover on each yelp can sometimes take away some rasp. Biggest thing, like ANY call, try different variations, pressure, air volume, jaw movement until you find the recipe you like. Trying to get a different sound by repeating the same mechanics is futile. Trust me, I know! LOL
** and some calls are gonna be raspy, no matter what. It's all about the cuts in the reeds. Like someone said, a straight no cut double reed will give you the cleanest yelps.
Here's another video of Shane Simpson explaining (it's been posted here a bunch - and it deserves a watch)

Good luck! Keep at it...
