I've been using Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane for the past couple of years.  I had to find something else when the Deft spray lacquer I was using became very inconsistent.  I'm so glad I switched.  I apply 2 coats of the Spar urethane in a wipe on method.  Works great for me.

I'm glad I made the switch also. I've tried everything from lacquer to poly, and oil finishes with a buff and wax. Spar is the way to go. Easily obtainable from many stores and very durable.

I haven't tried a lot a finishes, but spar has worked well for me, so I'm sticking with it. I started with spar after it scored very well in a finish durability test I read. The rattle can is the easiest glossy finish that I have found. The trick for me is to keep my coats light. Between coats I buff very lightly with steel wool just enough to dull it up, and use on average 3 coats. I made the mistake early on of being a little too aggressive with the steel wool, which led to some scratching. When things are done right it provides a glass smooth, durable finish. Keep at it, and I think you will be happy with the finish.
