striker question

I know we all get strikers made of different woods to obtain different sounds on our pot calls. I also know that diameter , length , weight and tip type variates different tones. My question is , when there are different material types placed on different striker tips does the type wood the striker is made of make a sound difference or is does it become irrelevent. Example , take a yellowheart and a purple heart that are identical in diameter and length , then place a ivory tip on each on. Will they really sound different or would both pretty much have the same sound. Thanks

Different.  just because the tip is the same material the wood used for the rest of the striker will make it sound different.

That is a great question and from experience let me help you out some. When ( I ) place ivory on a striker I tenon it in place...meaning I drill a hole in each receiving end of the striker and the ivory, what this does is strengthen the joint from just a butt joint to one with internal support as well. What this does is carry any vibrato from the wood through as if it were just plain without the ivory...if it were butt joint, ie. flat against flat...glued then the vibrato would change somewhat because of the break between the two surfaces is broader where the glue is applied. Limited difference can be heard....one thing is the length of the striker itself is shortened to accommodate the added piece this will raise the pitch somewhat...because there is less length for the vibration to take effect...
