turkey trip essentials

Going on my first outfitted, semi-guided trip this Spring to Oklahoma. Any tips, travel essentials, equipment, etc. that I may not be thinking of from those of you that have experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Clothes..bring the gamut..it could 20's in the morning and 80 in the afternoon. Good rain gear

Bottled water...some of that well water can do a number on you if you're not used to it.

Chapstick. Depending on where in OK you will be hunting, it can be dry and windy all day.

Extra of everything possible. If something was to ever break/tear it will happen when your hours from home.

Make sure your gun is fully cleaned and functional. Anytime I leave on a hunt I go over it looking and checking for anything that could go wrong. Pattern it and give it a good cleaning. If you use an optic and can pack a back up. The last thing I ever want is for a gun to break or have an optic issue. Most other stuff you can pick up at a store. Oh also a toothbrush!

Spray your clothes and boots down with Permethrin before you go.  They have ticks.  A lot!
Expect wind, sometimes LOTS of wind.  The weather can be unpredictable so rain gear and a jacket may be needed.
Take a camera, extra SD card and batteries.  You don't want to miss out on some photo ops.
Those Rios will take some calling, don't be afraid to work him if he's hot.
Outside that, pretty much just turkey hunting.

Take extra clothing. When you start hunting foreign land there's no telling what kind of weather you'll run into. I hunted SW Oklahoma last year at the end of April and we had wicked storms every night. Daytime was very warm, windy, and some rain....but killed two Rio's in less than a day & a half.

I pretty much carry the same stuff as I do near home, other than a range finder and more underwear.

Dad and I have made a few trips (home is WI), still packed the my turkey "gear" and a back-up gun plus a good sized cooler JIC a bird was getting mounted, clothes I packed to try and cover anything mostly. One thing I figured out for me was them western birds liked to travel a bit and getting in front of them was key, So I walked a lot (Extra Socks was a big one) and boots, used my bino's more for scouting birds in the open terrain.

Driving---take extra everything-- clothes, rubber boots, regular boots, decoys--pack like your wife would if she was packing for her and a couple of kids for a 2 week vacation.

Flying---Ammo must be in it's original box (no singles) in your lockable gun case, use a carry on bag with your binos, rangefinder and calls so you can protect them and have extra baggage weight without paying an additional fee, get a bag big enough to get your clothes, raingear, boots (1 pair) etc in it but don't exceed the 50 lb limit or you will be charged an additional baggage fee. 

Check with the outfitter to see if a Wally World is close by in case you forget something.

One last thing---HAVE FUN and ENJOY the EXPERIENCE!!!  Traveling to KILL Turkeys PRICELESS!

Snake boots and a chair of some sort are essentials in TX and OK...may not see any snakes, but you'll appreciate a good pair of boots when walking through all the mesquites and prickly pear.
If you get into a situation where you need to sit down fast, that Gobbler Lounger will save you lots of time. Also, a good pair of ratchet shears will help.

I never go on any trips without my Browning turkey lounger and a thick cushion..
Having said that make sure you bring a few extra gloves, and facemasks. they always seem to disappear on a trip or a buddy might need one.
Never pack ammo in your case with the gun and make sure you give yourself extra time for check in with firearms.Don't forget your sling.
Alot of guys forget rain wear...Dont be that guy!
A Compass...a real compass from a reputable maker don't rely on your cell phone..
Maps..you can never have enough maps..GPS's are good I know but I'm still a little old fashioned I guess.
Therma cells are great in buggy areas.Get the refill packs.I have mine in the camo holster with the little pockets and keep it clipped to the strap on my vest.
Get all your licenses,tags,paperwork done ahead of time online..Your time can be limited due to delays,weather,traffic, etc.
I always keep some zip ties,TP,chalk,trail tape,sandpaper,mini binos,first aid kit,knife,multi-tool,pen and power bars in my vest..A headlamp and flashlight..a few extra couldnt hurt.
This Christmas my kids got me an auxillary battery source for my smart phone..I like it..it will charge your phone back up in the field if you run down
