I had one bird left to kill and I've been at it pretty hard but kept falling up short. I've worked a gobbler in a spot several times and even this late in the season he always had hens with him. Very little gobbling has made it tough as well. Today started with hearing a fired up bird way over on another property that seemed to want to play. Took about an hour but he came right on in gobbling hard, but instead of coming straight to me he circled the small bay head that I was set up on and hung up. With a quick sneak and slip I was back in the game and he was closing the gap. Just when I thought it was a done deal the land owner came riding through on his golf cart and after a few putts it was over. Really ? who does this guy think he is...
... Well it was 10:30 and I loaded up and started home with my head hung low but a smile on my face thinking of how I almost showed that bird who was boss. Just down the road I slowed down to check the last spot I have to hunt, on which I've seen zero birds this year. And low and behold I see a strutter !!!! and then a hen. I scramble to make a plan, slip in and set up at a big live oak and made a couple clucks. Seconds later I hear a hen coming and she was looking for me. She walked right by me and circled the big oak and stood there clucking and yelping. Now that put me in the middle and I knew I was in the hot seat then !!!! About a minute passed and I hear him drumming then out he stepped at 25 yards in full strut. I just sat there soaking it in, watching him perform for a little before knocking him of his feet. My day went from skunked to score in a matter of five minutes. Man I love it...A fine way to end the season. 20lbs, 9 7/8" beard with 7/8" spurs.
