Toms stop gobbling

Two days in a row at totally different spots had Toms coming in from 200 yards away gobbling all the way then right before they get within range prolly 50 yards they just shut up don't say another word. I stayed put and just waited but they never came in. What am I doing wrong haven't been hunting very long so I don't know what to do.

if he answers your call around 100 yds away shut up and wait. seems to work for me. if he wont come in give a few soft clucks purrs and a soft yelp. when there close i like to call very lightly i never get aggressive when there close

First thing to remember Turkeys can pinpoint the exact location of your calls the more you call the better they can locate you. If there coming to you there's no need to call more when you think there less than 100 yards I'd have my gun pointed in the direction I expected gobbler and not move a muscle. Just a guess but if there getting to 50 yds they might have spotted you. If I have time I always cut a few bushes and stick them up around set up( make sure there not close enough to interfere with gun movement) just a few bushes will break up your outline and let you move SLOWLY if you need to adjust gun position. I cannot over emphasis the need for sitting motionless moving when a gobbler or hen is close is proabably the best conservation method ever devised. As I look back over my Turkey hunting career the 3 most important things I've learned are calling softer/less frequent, learning when and how much movement you can get away with and Patience. Just a guess but if there getting to 50 yds they might have spotted you.

The ol' sneak in and give you the periscope head trick, works (almost) every time!

Could see birds both times and know they didn't see me just couldn't get to close the distance didn't call any after they where getting close just sit and watched I just wondered if any suggestions to get them a little closer. Birds this weekend gobbled good on roost but got quiet when they hit the ground maybe they will get in full throttle soon.

If you could see them, they could definitely see your position where the hen should be. Don't under estimate their eyes, they can see a human eye blink 60 yards with no problem. Not saying they did see you, might of picked up on something they didn't like? Your outline, glare from gun, glasses? etc. Or simply knew the hen should be there and didn't see one? Select a better setup so when you first see them, they are in gunrange.
