Daniel Boone National Forest

It's killing me having to wait til April 25th to hunt here in WV. Was thinking about hunting Daniel Boone National Forest  in Kentucky because its pretty close to where I live. Has anybody hunted there? If so does it recieve alot of pressure? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just tryin to extend my season a little while stayin pretty close to home.

I have hunted it once. There was alot of Ohio folks hunting the portion I was in. I know several guys that go down there every year and are very successful.

Lots of land and a good number of birds. Some parts get a lot of pressure but if you do your home work it is possible to get very far away from the crowd. 700,000 acres of land. My best advise is to get a map and spend a few weekends scouting. Also know the area your walking into before light. Every year my buddies on the F.D get called out because someone walked off a cliff in the dark. Usually some one from Ohio...

When I lived in Ohio I would drive down, camp, and hunt DBNF around Rowan County.  Nice area with plenty of birds.  The Ohio boys whine just as bad when they see KY license tags driving around "their" roads in the Wayne NF in Ohio.  

In all seriousness we did find several public access roads blocked by abutting landowners trying to keep all the NF for themselves.  Get the latest maps you can find and try and check out any questionable road closures with the NF Office.

Almost forgot to add - KY Fish & Wildlife has one of the best web sites going.  You can access their Telecheck system and see the turkey and deer harvest numbers for any individual county you may be considering hunting.  A great tool for the non resident hunter.

Search Daniel Boone National Forest, you can get all kinds of maps, the southern section, Red Bird to Harlan gets very little pressure and there are tons of birds there

In addition to DBNF there are also a ton of coal properties and WMA's in the eastern part of the state. But no matter where you hunt in Eastern KY you have to be willing to burn the boot leather on some pretty rugged terrain.
