I have a 870 youth model 20 gauge.  I'm looking for suggested combo for a 10 yr old shooter.  I don't want anything too tight and prb just needs to be a 30-35 yard gun.  I plan on shooting the federal hw #7.  I need some ideas for a choke.  Most of the turkey chokes appear to be too tight and the standard chokes are marked for lead only.  I want to allow for some wiggle room at 20 yards and we will be shooting standard bead sight.

I'd appreciate any input.

Try the Carlsons standard full choke (.590) it is rated for lead or steel.  I shoot it with the 3 inch heavyweight 7s and get around 220 pellets in 10 inches at 30 and 120 in 10 inches at a lazered 40 yards. Plenty of wiggle room at the short ranges and still quite good at 40.

You don't need an expensive choke to accomplish what you want.  The biggest thing is going to be recoil, especially with those Fed 3" HW's.  I would find something in a .570 (ie remington super full or Primos tightwad).  These are both readily available.  You may even want to find some Hevi #6 or 7's.  The recoil is less than the Fed HW #7's.

Don't let the "lead only" thing scare you.  Most of that is geared to stay away from larger steel shot.

Remember, at 35 yards, most any load will look good so you don't have to pay $60-$70 for a choke to get a killer load.  My daughter killed her first turkey at age 10 (bird in avatar) with an 870 20 ga...SSX .550...Fed HW 2.75 #7's...at 22 yards.  Have him practice with bird shot and slip the turkey load in on the hunt.  He will never know the difference when he pulls the trigger on a bird.

We will practice with light loads, so I'm not really worried about the recoil too much.

Most of the remington superful chokes I see are rated for lead shot only.  I'm thinking the standard lead/steel shot rem full choke might be best.

if you look at my 870 i just put together, i put the truglo gobbler stopper in mine. Its a somewhat tight pattern but very forgiving at 25 yard, i pretty much set this gun up for my GF, and she has done great practicing with it, just need a turkey to come in now.

I used the magblends, 25 yards does about a 1 1/2 foot spread much more forgiving than my 12g shooting longbeard.  but this set up will also kill a bird out to 40 no problem.

this is pretty cheap as well choke, if this dont work ive heard tighwad would be another good choise.

I put a Remington full choke in my daughter's 870 and it will kill them at 30 yards all day long with Fed HW#7.  Forgiving pattern to.  Plenty of spread at 30 yards.

I've taught/taken many young kids on turkey hunts. My opinion is modified choke is the way to go with kids that young. My daughters started out with 6 shot but the heavyweight 7s are better. Actually exciting patterns. My younger daughter, who now is 12 is shooting an old Winchester ranger youth model. It came w a modified choke and is light enough for her to carry. The #7s are patterning at 40 yards. Not ideal for a child but if you saw the full very dense pattern at that distance you'd be amazed.
No rag tag exterior holes and it was blowing through 3/8 ply. Full choke in my opinion makes it too easy for little kids to miss. If we're gonna try to grow them in the sport we gotta help them succeed., modified at first can do that, especially at reasonable range
