Tired of looking for all my parts and peices to clean my 12/20ga guns, every time something is missing.
Anybody have a good kit for 12/20 shotguns? Or quality parts that you use and I could make my own kit?
Also other supplies, solvent, patches, grease, oil, etc.......
I've never really found a kit that was satisfactory. They seem to contain items that I seldom if ever use and not enough of what I use the most.
Here's what I find to work for me. I use a solid brass cleaning rod with a muzzle protector. I've had the one that I use most for years but as I recall, it's made by KleenBore.
Jointed rods are okay as long as they don't have too much flex. They should be the large diameter "shotgun" rods. I much prefer brass to aluminum rods and I'm always careful to keep the rod away from the muzzle or any contact with the bore. The muzzle protector helps with that. KleenBore makes those as well. It's a "muzzle guard", it's brass and only $4.00-$5.00, well worth the money.
I buy the best bore brushes I can find and I change them out often. Brownell's Double-Tuff are some of the best I've seen.
I use Hoppe's #9 for most bore work. I buy it by the quart and transfer to smaller Hoppe's wide mouth bottles so that I can dip a brush into it easily. Hoppe's works as well as anything else and better than most other products, is readily available (Walmart usually carries it) and is very reasonably priced.
Outers makes a good 3" x 3" cotton patch that works for all gauges. You can purchase them in bulk packs of 225 and they do a good job. There are other brands as well that are just fine but it's important to use cotton patches and not synthetic. They absorb better and help to get the gunk, loosened by the Hoppe's and a good brush, out of the bore.
Another good line of products is made by Pro-Shot.
I use different lubricating products at different time but don't mix them. Some can react with each other unfavorably. They all work when we do our part of using them where they are needed, sparingly.
Lastly, I have both 12 gauge and 20 gauge BoreSnakes. They are handy, they do a good job and they will last for years. I especially like the "Viper" model.
It takes a little time to assemble those products but with them you'll be able to keep your guns clean.
I hope that helps some.
Thanks,
Clark
