I'm new to the board, so first of all hello to everyone. I have turkey hunted for 11 years and have always used a 12 ga. But I have an 870 20 ga. with screw in chokes that my wife uses and a NEF Pardner 20 ga. 3 inch modified that i have considered having threaded for chokes and drilled and tapped for a red dot. But my dilemma is i don't want to spend the money on the gunsmith work on the pardner if it's not going to shoot well. So my question is for anyone who has had an NEF threaded, Do they shoot?? Or should I just buy a good choke for my 870?

Hardtime_NC

I would think you can get either one to give awesome results with the right choke/load combination.  Oh and :welcomeOG:!

You may not be able to have the NEF threaded for a Remington choke and that may mean buying another type thread. Next, it may cost $65 or more to have it threaded and purchase another choke for turkey.

Yes the NEF can shoot but what will be the cost? It may be good to check out some H-13 7s , Fed HW7s , or some lead loads such as the Fed FC and shoot whatever in the 870.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm new to this 20 gauge hunting, so if I go the 870 route, what's agood choke and constriction. I have a H.S. Undertaker in it now that my wife uses, but it's not suitable for the high density shot. I was looking online at the pure gold tempest and the indian creek chokes but have no clue. I want to be able to kill birds at 40 yards and from the numbers you all are putting up with a 20, i know they are capable of doing so with the #7's.

IC .555 with hevi 7's or if you really want the numbers go with the Nitro 7's.  However I will warn you that the patterns I have been getting are extremely tight at closer ranges and dont allow much room for error.

I would sell the NEF as is and buy one of the NEFs with threaded chokes

Welcome to the forum!! :welcomeOG:
You are in the right place to learn what you need to know and more. There is plenty of things posted here that you can use for your Pardner or your 870. You can go from post to post and find different info on gun, chokes, and shell combos. Them it's up to you to pick a starting point.

Good luck with whatever you choose. I too jumped on the 20 band wagon last year and have earned alot by just reading what these guys post.

I have looked on their website and can't find one with screw in chokes in a 20 gauge. I even thoought about just buying a barrel and switching it out with mine but can't find one.

They sell a 26 inch with a regular stock and a 22 inch with a youth stock, at least they did last I knew

I called H&R, they stopped making the pardner with the screw in chokes. They do have a youth turkey gun, SB1-F25, it has fixed full choke .590. It is drilled and tapped.  The Topper deluxe has screw in chokes, and a vent rib barrel.  I would shoot the Remington 870, with PG, IC, or even Carlson's choke. Try some Hevi-13 in #6, or #7 shot and see how it patterns.  A .555 choke may or may not get you higher number. If it is for hunting a .570 has a little more room for error. I get 140's in 10 at 40 with the PG .570. Very even pattern.  Every gun is different, and it is trial and error to see what combo is right for you. 20's rock. Almost forgot to mention, Rem Super Full choke has also been impressive.

A good gunsmith can thread your gun in what ever threads you choose if the barrel is thick enough.

I have had good luck with Carlsons for hunting chokes, I have a .585 in my Beretta and it shoots in the 120's and a .575 in my Browning and it shoots in the 140's both with Fed. HW #7's they have had no trouble filling my freezer!

I saw that model of Pardner that Dawei posted, but did not see the compact model. I just wonder if they all have the stainless receiver. I guess I will have to call them and find out.

Ranman

That model has been discontinued, it is still on there website. But no longer offered.
