28 guage turkey gun for 6 year old...Help!

Hey fellas I'm from SC and am new to the forum.  I have 4 and 6 year old sons that I would love to get in the turkey woods as soon as possible.  I am thinking about getting my 6 year old a New England Firearms 28 gauge single shot for his birthday in March in hopes that he can hunt the youth day at the end of  the month.  I think his grandfather will be more excited than him if I do end up getting it for him.  I have read about tungsten super shot on the web but I do not know anyone that actually knows where to get the shot or the recipes for the loads.  I looked at the gun this morning and they come with a modified barrel but I would think that he would be good up to about 30 yards at least with the tss.  I have a youth model Browning Gold that I shoot Fed. HW out of and have killed several birds with but I would like to start him out on something a little less complicated.  If any of you have any information on how to get this stuff or if it is even possible I would greatly appreciate it. now about the single shot 28 gauge , thumps kids like a mule! Too light , too short.
straight stock=no pistol grip. Rock hard recoil pad.  thought i had make a wise choice.
My son hated his , even with field loads at age 8. 
Bear in mind he was already into a 308 carbine which he shot just fine until he would run out of bullets.
So i handed him a youth 20 HR single , he liked it better, but still kicked him pretty good.
So youth 870 20 gauge , now he could shoot boxes of shells at turkey head targets, pop cans and clays.

A little more weight makes a big difference to a kid i guess.
At 6 use a tripod for steady shooting at still targets.

I think those 28 gauge NEF guns and extra barrels are impossible to find now. Do you have one located?

Owlhoot is on the money. The single shots do buck pretty good. My boys 6&8 do shoot a .410 topper. The 8 year old handles it fine but my 6 year old got a nice cut on his nose from the hammer  last year shooting it. Just something to think about.

Thanks y'all...I do have a 4/10 (same one I started with) that he could shoot.  I can get the 28 cut down with a nice recoil pad when I purchase it.  Didn't realize they were that hard to get..should I  get it quick?  I do not think my 6 year old will have much of a problem with the recoil...the boy is fearless.  My 4 year old is another story.  Anyone know where to get any tss?  If I have to cut the 4/10 down, I'll do it...but they won't be shooting anything over about 15 yards (with lead).  Thanks!

Maybe pattern that 410 before you go cut'n on it. I've got an old Winchester 37 "full choke" that I though about letting my 8 year old Daughter use  last year until we patterned it.  I couldn't even get a 15 yard hunt'able pattern out of it with #6 lead and she didn't like shooting it anyways. I just held her back till this year and got her a youth 20ga auto and she is pounding targets with light loads.   Good luck with the kids...

I've found some hw 7.5  so I will probably get the 28 and see if he can handle it.  If not, maybe next year.  I found a guy that helped me out with the hw shot so maybe I can come up with a load for the .410 if he can't handle the 28 right now.  I'll definitely shoot it a couple of times though.  I've killed many doves and squirrels with it so hopefully it shoots decent.  Thanks!

I would go with the youth model 870 20 gauge Because you can use it for dove, deer squirrels,  etc.  Just my opinion.

I let him shoot the .410 the other day and he handled it pretty well...I'm taking him to get measured and the stock cut down tomorrow.  The little gun shot suprisingly well with lead 2 1/2 ounce #6's.  That little thing kicks pretty good so I'm not going to try anything bigger right now.  We shot it at 20 yards and the turkey would have been dead every time.  I'm sure I can load something up to stretch the range out to around 30 yards.  I have a couple of 20 gauges that they can shoot in a couple of years.  I'll keep y'all posted...hopefully I'll have some pictures to post at the end of March.  Thanks again!

If its an H&R you can buy a youth stock through Choate pretty reasonable and save your original stock.
