Interested to see what others are getting in a 2 3/4in shell.

Does 35 and not 40 yards bother you for that? I am wanting to try a 2 3/4 #7 HW in my Baikal single barrel 26" 20 ga using a Sumtoy choke at 35 yards.

I am trying to see what the potential is for this shell.  Right now I can get a good pattern at 35 but it loses a lot at 40.  This may be the case for this load. I wanted to get other people's experience to see what I should be shooting for.

I shot this morning at 76* light wind and at 35 yards I got 113 in the 10 using a 26" Baikal MP18 single barrel with a 562 Sumtoy choke and the Fed HW 2 3/4- 1 1/8-#7. It did not kick nearly as much as the pre FC 3-1 5/16-#6 load I shot next.

What gun , barrel length, choke  do you have? If it is a Remington I may be able to try a different choke for comparison. Getting a 1 1/8 oz. load to beat 100 in the 10 at 40 would be pretty difficult.

I shoot a Remington 1100 26in with a Carlson non-ported turkey choke.  I was able to get an even 137 at 35 yards.  Going to 40 yards it opened up to 76 in  10 inch circle.  I have not done any extensive testing, this was my first time shooting it with turkey loads.

Temp was 65 degrees and calm.

OK - I'll try a SSX in a 11-87 26" bbl when I return and see if tight makes anything better. Losing half your pattern in 5 yards sounds crazy but not with the 20s and light loads. That is exactly why it is so critical to know your distances and capabilities.

I was surprised by the drop as well.  Makes me wonder if I need to shoot more to confirm.  That was one reason I wanted to get other people's experience.  A friend of mine is getting the SSX and I may try it to see how it compares.

With the right choke, you should be able to get a solid 40 yd pattern. Sumtoy makes an excellent choke for the 1.5 oz shell with most folks putting up 160s or better at 40 yds. The 2.75" shell with 1.125 oz of shot has 3/4 the amount of shot as the 3" shell, so 3/4 of 160 is still 120 -  solid numbers. I would contact William at Sumtoy and ask him. He is a straight shooter.

Some of the numbers don't add up here. Since I had shot outside the 10 " circle my guess is that there are more than 120 pellets in a Fed HW 2 3/4" 1.125 oz. load of #7 shot but I haven't looked at the chart.

There are supposed to be 219 #7's per oz. in the Federal Heavyweight (15g/cc), based on what I've seen. That should put ~246 pellets in that 1.125oz load.

My understanding on pellet count is the same as J-Shaped. 

Have you had a chance to do some patterning?

No, you misunderstood my point. If the Sumtoys are putting up 160 with the 3" 1.5 oz shell, they should theoretically put up around 120 with the lighter payload of the 2.75", 1.125 oz shell.

Got it that time and proportionately that is reasonable to assume. I got 113 at 35 using a 562, he got 136 or so using 575 at 35 and using these assumptions it would appear that  he would not  get only 76 pellets at 40 yards.

I'll try the SSX when I can.
