Any hunters going to New Mexico for their turkey hunting this season?

I would like to go someday, always thought most of the hunting was above my comfortable elevation of 4-6000 feet.

I will be heading to the Gila National Forest two weeks from today.  Can't wait.  I'm packed and ready to go.  Haven't missed an opener there in a dozen years.  Most of the elevation we hunt  is above 8000 ft.

good luck t-man headed that way on the 14th myself.  Love the way N.M. always starts their seasons on the 15th, three days hunting N.M. then headed back to mentor the youths in Arizona on their youth opener on the 18th.  send pics.

No guide here.  Just my cousin and I on public land.  Good luck in Arizona slamman.  I'll be there on the Kaibab on the 25th!

I got a leftover tag in the Kaibab and decided to wait until the 18th of May to hunt, I get the older toms to respond to my calling in the latter part of the season.  I'll be in touch to see how your hunt went.  Good luck on your hunts.

Anyone hunt up North?  Chama area, I may be up that way in May so might have time to get out? Can you hunt any of the national forest land for turkey? I hunted Elk last year near Canyon Plaza and Canjillon.

I hunt near Reserve and don't know much about the hunting in the northern part of the state.  I know some of those northern units use to be draw only tags.

The spring Over-the-counter hunts are listed by Game Management Unit.  It looks like all the units in your area are open, but best to check the proclamation.  If it is national forest land in an open unit, you can hunt it.

Hunted near cimarron last year ... Ranch had tons of hens and jakes , but in 3 days of hunting with four guys we only saw one long beard , and I shot him the first day .. It was really strange .. There were no leaves on the cottonwoods yet , so we would get close to the roost sites before dark ( there 6-7 different roost  on  the property ) and watch .. The trees would be loaded with birds , but all jakes and hens .. One of the roost sites held about 100 birds , and the other sites no less than 30-40 birds .  In the mornings not one gobble was ever heard in 3 days of hunting . I can only assume that the gobblers were still in big bachelor groups , and on another ranch . This year I am hunting southern New Mexico .
