Correcting POA/POI issues

A recent trip to the patterning board has proved that my 870 shoots roughly 4-5" low at 40 yds. How can I go about correcting this issue without adding aftermarket sights? Can I shim the stock? Which side do I shim the top or bottom?

have you tried different chokes and ammo to see if that was the actual issue? i only ask because i found in one of my guns the Indian Creek choke actually shot 4" low and left but my factory chokes shot just fine.  Switched to a Sumtoy and prob was fixed.

other then that you are pretty much down to sights like a FF3 or rifle sights. You can shim it but that may not do a ton for how off your is.

With the .575 Carlson it shoots low with any shell. Even lead 5s at 30yds.
I cant remember what the SSX did but I'm pretty sure it was the same. I really wanted to stay away from the add ons, but if it's inevitable I'll put some fiber optic rifle sights on it.

did you try just a factory full or mod to see?

Have a qualified gunsmith bend the barrel for you.

Go down to Eastonollee and see Curtis Wilbanks.  A while back people had problems when they sent him their gun/barrel but if you call before you go I think he'll do it right there for you.  I've heard he does excellent work, his C/S was just lacking on people that sent stuff to him.

You need to add height to the comb. Anything will work to find out how much you need to add. If you have any pipe wrap, that works. You can use a neoprene sleeve on the stock and if that's not enough, put a little of the pipe wrap under it. If you raise the comb, you raise the point of impact. You don't want to pad the sides of the stock, that will change your windage POI.

If you end up adding sights, take a good look at William Fire sights.  I put the universal sluggers on my 870 because I was shooting low.

How thick should I start with?

I'd start with whatever you have up to 1/4" or so.

You'll soon know if you're too thick or need to add a little.

A little goes a long way.

just becarefull not to add to much and make it uncomfortable to shoot! I would just use the Williams fire sight if it was mine good luck to you which ever way you go
