I recently bought the mossberg 535 turkey thug( comes with the tru glo red dot) seems to be a good gun. Shot several different loads with the stock accu choke and wasn't too impressed so I ventured out and started looking at other chokes and was wondering what combinations of ammunitions and chokes worked good for other mossberg 535 turkey thug owners to get an idea what choices I should make without having to waste a whole bunch of money.

Jon,

First, welcome to the OG! Glad to have you here, and I think I can help you a little bit with that gun.
I owned one, and the choke I found worked the best was the Primos Jellyhead in a .660 constriction.
I would go onto Clark Bush's website, www.allaboutshooting.com, and get the instructions on deep cleaning the choke and barrel. This will help a lot with pattern density.

Next, if you can afford it, pick up some heavier than lead Hevi-13 in either 3-2-7, or if your state won't allow #7 shot, 3-2-6 Hevi-13 will do the trick. Those guns are so light with so much recoil, I stayed away from the 3.5" shell.

If you don't want to drop the coin on the heavier than lead shells, Winchester has come out with the longbeard turkey shell that looks very promising. However, remember that it is still lead, and anything after 40 yards is really pushing it.

Best of luck, and if I can help, please let me know!

Thanks for the information chatterbox! I have been researching some of the newer winchester loads including the high velocity, double x magnum, and the long beard loads and I was wondering if the long beard loads are supposed to be the better loads if so what's different about them?

I'm probably not saying it right, but if I am correct, the shot is packed in resin to allow it to stay together tighter for a longer distance.

I ordered a carlsons .660 ported turkey choke so when that comes in ill have to get some winchester long beard extended range loads and give them a try.

i have a Indian creek choke and a jelly head and IC shoots better for me. You should try the new winchester longbeard loads they shot great for me ,also the hevi 13 # 7s are good also.
