Getting started with mouth calls

Okay I'm wanting to start building mouth calls and have done it before. I've been calling in contest and hunting since I could walk and it's something I've always wanted to do. What do I need to get started. I'm gonna get a feather ridge press but don't know which to get. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If you have a press you have all you need besides materials. I get my latex and frames from pioneerturkeycalls.com. The only thing you will have to do is cut your tape by hand. You can make a template and follow it to cutt your tape or you can get a tape cutter from Thad. Good luck and you will find that your turkey calling will get much better after you start making your own calls.

As far as reed tension what would be a good starting number? And reed thickness what does play as far as tone and pitch?

You usually want a thicker reed on top. Thats why you see alot of calls with yellow, green, or grey .004 on the top reed. Then thinner reeds underneath like .003 clear or prof. Depends on how you call if your a huffer or a blower as far as tension goes. Try somewhere around .150 and go from there either more or less. Good luck,

 Thanks man that helps me a lot! My press is ordered and I'm bout to order some materials to get started. Is their a certain kind of scissors that you use for making the cuts in the read?

I use some real sharp sowing scissors. I got them at hobby lobby. They were about 20.00. They are small because you are working in a small area.

When you stack the latex do you jus use a punch to hold it together before you put it in the frame?

Actually I use a corn cob holder. It pricks twice with each attempt.

Did you get your press and supplies? How are the calls coming?

Yes I got everything in and actually made my first one last night! I'm having a problem cutting the reeds and I may be trying to go to fast. I'm trying to make a combo cut and I can't get it without it being jagged looking.
