1. - I use decoys because they can be a very effective tool.
2. - I dont see myself getting away from them because Im not to proud to use them if it will help me bag the bird.
3. - Ive killed a lot of birds without them but I wont discount there value in some of the places places that I hunt (big open country).

I used a blind for the first time last year when I talked my wife into hunting with me- We had a bird roosted in a tree  in the middle of a wide open field (about a 70 acre field) and we had no real way to hunt him (no cover aside from that tree he was in) so I put out a pop up blind late that night and we snuck back in early the next a.m.... It was effective.

shotgun hunting have never used a blind...have used decoys...depends on the situation and the land or terrain..

bowhunting....I use a blind and deks...SOMEDAY i would like to try to kill one with a longbow and no blind...now that sounds like a challenge

1. Why do you use them?

2.  Do you ever see yourself getting away from using either one or both?

3.  Do you feel you need them to be successful at killing turkeys?

For me;

1. I only use a blind for turkey hunting if my 7 year old daughter, or my wife is with me. I look forward to the day when my little one can run-n-gun with me, and be able to set up quickly as well with limited movement once set up can occur.  :D

2. Although while racking my brain here, I cannot recall shooting any of my birds over a decoy, I suppose there will always be one in my vest. I have one of everything else in there, might as well have one of those in there too!

3. Nope, I don't feel I need either one. Matter of fact, I prefer to move in real close and then set up quickly something that neither one of those items allows me to do.

I use the blind with my kids- my son is 8 and it's hard to keep him focused let alone to be still for more than 5 seconds. When he is with I will use dekes as I feel it helps take attention away from the blind and hopefully we see more birds?

If I'm alone I dont use either one.

1. Why do you use them?
I'm in wheelchair and it's hard to hide one of these babies. I do not use a tent blind, tried it once and hated it - can't hear out of it. I use camo burlap draped in front of me. As for dekes, I hunt fields and open areas now because of the chair and dekes help draw in some birds.

2.  Do you ever see yourself getting away from using either one or both?
I doubt it. I worked how to be successful again at turkey hunting after my accident left me paralyzed. I figure me being in a chair is giving the bird an advantage to begin with.

3.  Do you feel you need them to be successful at killing turkeys?
Probably so. Even though I have killed birds without dekes since my injury. I used to run-n-gun the mountains and hardwoods before I was injured and I killed birds then. I'll challenge anyone to put themselves in my position and be consistently successful on mature spring birds.

Way to go! Neill  :anim_25:

I use a decoy all the time just because I'm a creature of habit and I really like the look of my DSD's  :wav:

But seriously, and this is all me, I figure if I'm calling at them, I'd like em to see what's making all that noise.  I hunt open areas a bunch and figure it helps.

Same thing with the blind.  I like being able to move around, can't sit still that long and I like being able to move a bit, makes all day hunts way easier.

To each his own.

Just don't need  them  to kill longbeards anymore. :fud: :newmascot:

When you get old and it's hard to get up off the ground a chair in a blind is great to have. Yes I use decoys bnecause I want to.

doublegobble

I have used both all of the time in the previous seasons:
1. Because I was hunting with a bow. I tried 2 seasons without a blind and never was able to get the bow drawn on a turkey without them catching me.
2. I hunt quite a few areas where you sit out in the middle of a wide open field with absolutely no cover what so ever.
3. My kids were hunting.
This will be my 1st year going back to full time shotgun hunting so most of the time I won't use a blind. I will use it if I end up hunting my pasture setups.
Red meat isn't bad for you, fuzzy green meat is bad for you.

I use both. Why?
I enjoy having that old gobbler come to my decoys and fall in love, I just get a big kick out of it. Do I need one to kill a bird, no, Just love that part of turkey hunting.
As far as using a blind, I don't use them all the time, it depends where I'm setting up. I like the ability to set there and have a good time with my hunting partner and have a coffee break without being seen. It'a just a different part of hunting than when I run and gun. Bottom line....I just want to enjoy my time in the woods and turkey hunting. I love to kill a bird as much as anyone, but , its the joy of being there thats most important to me.
