I walked into a store the other day and found some Remington Hevi Shot 2 3/4 in. #6.  Anybody pattern these and how do they perform?

I can't be of any help to you with your question about patterning. All the RHS shells were loaded using the same wads that Remington used for steel shot at that time. That meant that they had a great deal of excess capacity and small plastic pellets were used to fill in the voids.

I shot a lot of the 3" shells with #6 shot and still have a case or so of them. They were low recoil and would certainly kill turkeys but did not pattern as well as the shells we see today from Hevi-Shot.

Lastly, I don't remember seeing any 2.75" shells. What is the shot payload in them?

Thanks,
Clark

Here it is.

Thank you. I suspect that those shells would ruin a turkey's day. We shot the 3" shells through very tight chokes, .640 to .650 gave the best patterns and my guess is that you'd see best results with chokes in that "neighborhood" as well.

When RHS was introduced, they recommended chokes with a .675 e.d. because they were very worried about barrel and choke damage. What we found out over time was that the very thick wads and buffering protected the bores very well. Remington was still using a 30" circle at 40 yards to measure performance at that time and the .675 chokes did throw some "full choke" patterns in that circle at that distance.

Lastly, if you get those shells at a good price, the shot in them can be worth more than the price of the shells. A couple of years ago, when a warehouse full of the 3" shells was found, they were selling them from $7.00 to $12.00 for a box of 10. I haven't seen any on dealer shelves in the last year and I'm sure those real bargains are gone.

Thanks,
Clark

Finally got to pattern the loads.  40 yards, Mossberg 835 24" barrel shooting Remington Hevi-shot 2 3/4in, 1 3/8oz, #6 shot.  The MAD Super Max .695 did the best at 100 in the 10" circle while the Star Dot had 94 and the Rhino had 95.  I figure I might try them next season.

Sounds about right what i got with them, had better patterns with lead.
but did use them in an area where  no lead is allowed, shot a tom about 30 or so , floored him.
The is a lot better out there now to chose from though.

I bought some years ago for dirt cheap just to use for duck hunting.  I think I just cut them open and took the shot out of them for my handloads.

with the right choke they will be deadly, just got to experiment and find it
