I have a quaker boy hurricane (waterproof). The company says no chalk required. I put chalk on it just to test it for a few yelps and it sounds better chalked. Is it ok to chalk this call or will the chalk damage it.

M Sharpe

If it sounds better chalked, then I would by all means chalk it.

It will sound better until it gets wet.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I did a little test on this today and it did'nt go well. It sounds good at first with chalk then it does'nt want to make a sound. For anyone that may read this that may be wondering if you should chalk this call.( DON"T) after 15 or 20 yelps the call does'nt want to work properly if it is chalked. Since you can't sand this call i had to use my scotch brite to lightly clean the chalk off and it worked again.

Never seen a box call that was totally waterproof to begin with. You can keep the playing surface dry anyway by holding the call flat in your hand. But, what about the rest of the call? If it get saturated, the sound's going dead anyway. IMO, Quakerboy and alot of the rest of these big name companies have produced some juck gimmic calls over the last several years. But, if it works and calls turkeys to the gun, then it's worth the money you paid for it.

My buddy has an older " waterproof" box and a new one. He loves the way the older one sounds and ask me the very same chalk question about a week ago, the difference was the " waterproof " had worn off in a spot so we jus lightly chalked that worn spot. It helped in that situation, however it hasn't gotten wet yet. I would have to agree that no call made of wood is waterproof and wet will affect the sound. Interesting post here for sure

This call is'nt the greatest sounding call in the world but i have killed two nice gobblers useing it. The problem i have with it is the fact that it is really picky about how it is played. I tried a friends custom call and it almost played itself compared to my quaker boy. I agree no call is waterproof, i bought this call when i first started 3 years ago. If i knew about the better calls then i probably would not have purchased this call and will never buy another so-called waterproof again.

There you go! I and many, many others started off just like you, buying production calls because custom call makers were few and far between. I can't begin to tell you the number I've killed using a Primos Power Crystal years ago. But in todays world you can get a much better call for just a little bit more and form a friendship that will last a life time to boot. With internet access the choices are unlimited. There are a number of high quality call makers on this site as well as other sites that are just waiting to oblige you.
