I was catching up on some honey do's yesterday, and felt the sun was extra bright. When I looked up this is what I saw.

Thank You

Wow! That's a great pic. I've seen halos before but none that clear. Is that a hawk in the top right?

I don't konw what it was,I was lucky to get that shot. I had layed down on my lawn under that tree and had the camara was on rapid fire. I didn't even know the bird was in the shot; because,I was shooting straight at the sun.
My neighbor thought I went down mowing the lawn  :TooFunny:

Very cool.  Reminds me of some Hole Punch Clouds I was able to snap a few pictures of a few years ago.  I will see if I can find them.

Here is the one I took.

I was coming out of the woods turkey hunting in Washington County, AL.  At the time I had never even heard of the phenomena.

The National Weather Service in Mobile took this picture about 60 miles South of Where I was:

They did a short paper/information Statement about it:

I've seen that before too, but usually at night around the moon. I heard it is from ice crystals in the atmosphere. Does that sound right Bama Proud?  Neat hole punch cloud pics too!! I saw them once down here in FLA, and took some pics of them.

Yea, size and shape distribution of ice crystals around the sun/moon. More specifically light refraction through those crystals. That one looks like its a 46 degree Halo...much rarer and distinct that the more common 22 degree Halo.

More than you ever wanted to know about optical phenomena:

Funny that you post this. My wife was driving my 3yr old home from school (he goes 2 days a week). He always calls me on speaker in the truck to tell me how his day at school was. So as he was telling me about his day he says dad I see a rainbow so since I am on speaker I ask my wife is it raining she says no I don't know what he is talking about. So we finnnish talking and I get back to work. When I got home from work she shows me a pic that looks just like yours that her friend had snapped that day. Turned out that that was the "rainbow" that my son was looking at.
