Mossberg 835 Opinions Please!

    Hi guys I have a friend looking to buy a Mossberg 835 Turkey/Slug Combo. It has the 24 inch overbored barrell, and is the Mossy Oak infinity camo. I was wondering how these guns pattern and what choke may be the best for this gun. I have all remingtons so I really don't know much about Mossberg. It looks like a nice gun! THANKS!!!

All my buddies shoot an 835 at turkeys.  They pattern extremely well.  I have always shot a Benelli Super Black Eagle or a Winchester Super X2 during turkey season. Well I just picked up an 835 this season and it throws the best pattern of all my turkey guns.  I am more than pleased with it.

great gun pattern great with hevi 13 7  shot , mine likes the pure gold 670, indian creek 675, stardot 676, these all will give you good numbers

The best choke is the old original Star Dot choke.  But finding one now is like finding gold.  But Colonial Arms made the original Star Dot chokes.   The owner of Colonial Arms has told me that they are making them just about like they did years ago in the 90's that shot so good.  The verdict is still out on that one.  Myles on here has one and is supposed to let us know the rest of the story soon on that one.  But you can buy one form Colonial Arms at their website for probably around $60 shipped.  You want the one that is .676.  They know if you tell them that.  I have an original Star Dot .676 choke and no other choke I have shot yet would tocuh it with Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #7 loads.  Other good chokes that I have owned that shot very well are Indian Creek BDS .675, Pure Gold .670, TruGlo SSX .670, and Jelly Head .690.  I have a new TruGlo Bone Collector .670 that mightyjoeyoung on here said that shoots so well,  but I haven't been able to test it.  But it sounds promising going by the pattern he posted on here with it.  Another choke I have that shot a great Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #6 load with was the old MAD Max .680 choke.  It shoots pretty good.  But  I need to play with it more. 

I would tell your friend to shoot Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #7 loads for nothing else over the counter will beat them for pattern density unless you go with NITROS.  And some of the great lots of this Hevi-13 I would say would hang with NITROS.

That's what I say.  No other shotgun I have owned personally would out shoot my Moss 835.  And they give you a 10yr warranty.

 I shoot the Mossy. 935 which has the same over bore barrel. I've found excellent results with a .690 Jelly Head with 3.5" Hevi-13 #6s or the Tru-Glo SSX with either the 3.5" Hevi-6s, 3.5" Federal Strut Shok in either 5s or 6s

They are excellent guns that throw some of the best patterns of any gun on the market. I've shot one for years as well as the 935 and SSi-ONE, all of which have the same barrel inside diameter. There are several chokes that work well with those guns. The SSX and the Hevi-13 are the best I've found in current production chokes. I shoot 3" shells in my guns most of the time and find that they do all that's needed to cleanly kill turkeys at all reasonable ranges.

The best shells that I see on the market today are the Hevi-13 shells with 2 oz. of either #6 or #7 shot. They just work.

Lastly, I really recommend that you "deep clean" the bore of your new gun. That process helps every gun but it was developed several years ago especially for the 835. Bought one about 2 years ago and will never buy another turkey gun.  I got the 835 with the really short barrel and it is great for the turkey woods.  You cant go wrong with the mossberg 835, its a great investment.  I shoot the nitros thru a rhino choke and im getting around 245 hits in 10" circle.

I own 4 dedicated turkey guns now and have owned more than a dozen over the years.  Some of them "B" guns that cost near an arm & a leg.  I've owned my 835 since 1990.  Ive spent many hours at the bench patterning and experimenting with loads and chokes.  As for patterns and killing Turkeys......... You can spend more money, BUT you won't get more gun.   The 835 is as good as it gets!

Definitely one of the best patterning guns out there. I have an 835 and a Benelli SBE 2, the Mossy outshoots the Benelli.

IMO the best turkey shotgun for the money handsdown. No other "stock" shotgun will throw as tight or as even a pattern as a properly choked mossy 835/935. If i was gonna get another, it would be with the new LPA trigger. That is a fine trigger on an awesome turkey gun. Some say they kick bad but the way i look @ it, you never feel recoil when your droppin the hammer on a gobbler!

You'll never go wrong with a 835.
