I need some scope help....

I mounted my scope on my gun and at 40 yards I am out of right windage adjustments (moved as far to the right as I can) and up adjustments (moved up as far as it will go). The rings are adjustable, my question is do I move the back ring right or left to get some movement back? I know that I can shim under the front ring to get some of the height adjustment back. Is a piece of paper enough or do I need to double it?

I think with adjustable rings you adj.the rings first,,to make bigger adj. Then fine tune with the wind. and elev. knobs.. Remove the scope and rings ,remount being sure your scope is aligned with the barrel ,and use a bore sighter.
