My permit will be from April 24 thru the 30th I took off work April26, 27 & 28. This will be the 2nd week of the spring season and I'll be trying to find out where to place myself for my hunt that begins the following Wend. So this weekend I try to find just where there roosting, I have a general idea of where they are my question is this, I don't want to ruin another hunters chance to score a turkey by busting birds he working so just how do I go about this?? I do have a owl call and I know how call with it, should I only scout after hunting hrs.??

You can just go and listen before daylight. You don't have to call or even bring your calls. Just listen for any gobbles and mark where they are roosted. You wont mess anybody's hunt up if your are just listening and not participating or tromping thru the woods.

You just have to be close enough to hear the gobbling - no need to be in calling range - set yourself up in a spot where you can hear from a good distance

Go in well before dark and wait for the sun to rise , they should start to " free gobble" gobble on their own .... if no luck , hit em with a owl call if your good at that , if you hear something or still nothing , get moving real quickly to another area ,you want to locate as many gobblers as possible -- and sit a listen , repeat the owl , write down the angle of the gobbles from you from a compass on a map etc..take notes - pick travel routes that you can enter and exit without being spotted

Avoid calling with a turkey call while scouting this will educate the birds , if it get latter in the day  hit em with a crow call

Avoid areas that you think have hunter traffic , go for the birds that are out of the way , and people will not interfere with you

once you find some areas with gobblers start figuring out the birds daily pattern where they like to roost , feed, where the hens are at, where the gobblers like to fly down to , when they gobble you might learn their daily route this way  , what places they like to travel ? creek , field , old road , swamp bottom -- scout as much as possible , find what they are eating , where the hens are nesting - dont interfere with other hunters, its not safe

the night before the hunt(s) go out undetected before roost time , and listen for a gobble or two - hit em with a owl call , see if you can figure out where he is going to be in the morning  --

Great advice for sure but one thing I would or wouldn't do is call at all. Go in well before sun rise and listen but leave the calls at home. If the birds don't gobble for some reason then why try to fire one up for someone who may be hunting close by. Let that hunter do his own work your there to listen and confirm an idea of where you think the birds are. JMO

Thanks for the advice finding an area where I can listen before daybreak, and not have to worry about calling makes sense. I don't want to be shot at by some hunter who thinks I'm a turkey!!
So if I find an area of concentration then try to go in the eve before my hunt and find where there roosting by using the owl call makes sense...Thanks!
