Squeeky pot

I've had a Cody slate call for years and sand it and my strikers w Scotchbrite pads but lately no matter how I sand call and stikers, the call will squeek/striker slide and otherwise make bad sounds if I put more than light pressure on the striker. I used to be able to cut and putt very loudly but now it is a gamble if i'm gonna make a loud unatural sound w three types of strikers, usually after I start a great sounding raspy series after the first 3 or 4 notes, what am I doing wrong ?

I have a Cody Call that did the same thing! I finely retired it.

You may have a broken sound board,Send it back they should stand behind it.Hopefully it is American made.

The glass on mine came loose after several years.  I cut it / pryed it out and reglued it back in using jb weld.  Sounds good again.

Just some guesses here,

You could try heating the slate to drive out moisture.
It maybe filled with slate slurry from years of conditioning and maybe need a cleaning with alcohol.
Strikers could be glazed, try hitting the surface and strikers with 150-220grit paper.
Call Cody and ask them, they may want it back so they can learn from it as well.

Along with the other suggestions,Have you laid the pot on a flat surface to see if it is warped?  It happens sometimes, especially if the pot gets wet.  That will pull the glue loose on two sides of the pot and create the squeal the talk about.

I appreciate all the advice guys. The call has gotten wet before, though i try ro keep it it dry in a ziplock bag. I'm goung to try to sand my strikers w real sandpaper, it seems the scotchbrite is pollishing the ends too smooth. I'm pretty sure the call is'nt broken but it does sand easily w the same pads that seem to be too soft for the strikers. I had another Cody that got cracked-hairline ( sat on it ) and while dull and not as loud would still make OK sounds.

If nothing is broken or loose, then I'm betting that if you will put a flame to the slate and hit your striker tips with a little sandpaper, it will come back to life. God Bless, Steve

If all you used on the slate surface is the green pad, then either touch the slate up a bit with 220 grit sandpaper (lightly) or use the brown scrub pad on it, it's a bit courser. Clean your striker tip with 100 grit sandpaper to get it rough enough to grab the surface agin. If you use a finer, grit it will just keep polishing the tip and not rough it up enough to play right.

 Thanks again guys and Steve you were right, my tips were pollished . I did almost exactly that yesterday and it helped. I sanded the call w 220 and the strikers w 80 and it is sounding better and now the squeeking is only caused by operator error that i'm working on now . I hav'nt bought a new call in a while and I think a crystal one may be next as i'm liking the sound and ease of use when i tried a friends a while back.
