Best call to purr and cluck

I have a nice slate my friend made me but I am finding it difficult to purr. Is there another call out there that makes this a bit easier? I can yelp and cluck pretty good on it just can't master the purr.

For friction surfaces I find slate the easiest, followed by ceramic. mouth calls, start with something edgy like a bat wing cut til you get it down good then advance to any mouth call.


If your are having trouble try a striker that grips better

I like a slate call and heavy hickory striker..  JMO though.  Those flare tip strikers are really good too if you want to just buy a striker.  Hope this helps..

I have a slate over slate in walnut from trkyhntr that sounds awesome and runs some great purs. And I just got a glass/glass in quilted maple that also sounds amazing esp with purrs. Nice and clean

Agree with above.  If you can't purr with the call; I'd switch up the striker.

slate is probably the easiest for making purrs and clucks. you may want to try a few different strikers.
I do have a copper pot and  purpleheart striker that makes very easy purrs.  I would start out trying
a few different strikers with the call.  As mentioned.....a good flair tip striker will do wonders for you.
You might also want to try something different with the conditioning of the slate.  Green scotch brite
pads are my favorite to condition the surface. If your slate is conditioned properly and you have a good
striker, you should be getting pretty good purr's out of it.

Just finished up 48 Curly Maple shortboxes that purr and cluck like a dream.
I used a different grit belt to turn the paddles than I usually do and, Bingo!
Sent a sound file to a buddy and he swore it was a slate call and said, he'd better be getten one of those. Kip

Chalk the side of a scratch box or get a call that is made the same. Doesn't work well when it's cold, but the volume and sound is perfect when you get it right. Enticer Calls offers a call that uses the method.
