Bad choke

Well guys I was getting my gun ready for doing some patterning with a "new to me" SSX choke I bought off ebay. Was purchased in summer of last year. I went to screw it in and it stopped about 1/4 inch before being flush. Hmmm? Well turns out the doggone thing is swelled. Right before the threads. I contacted the seller and they are going to refund my money but dang. I was really looking forward to trying this out.

I also contacted Truglo and they said I bought a paperweight. They were kind enough to say they would sell me a dealer cost replacement. Might just shoot my jellyhead and be happy.

So here is what I am pondering. What load did this person shoot that ruined the choke? Is anything I am going to shoot do this to my gun? I've heard of it happening and have seen one Benelli SBEII with a bulged barrel right before the choke. I do not want to do this to my gun. The replacement barrel for my gun is about $400.

I've got a couple of extended chokes for my SBEII that don't fit flush at the barrel/choke junction at the end of the barrel. Where they do fit flush is inside the barrel, the choke fits tight against the barrel skirt. From what I've seen, it's normal. It seems they machine them a tad long, to ensure they fit tight inside the barrel, where it matters. That choke might be fine. It could also be swelled too. I'm just relaying my experiences.

This!  That choke may not be swelled at all.  Check to see if the flange of the choke mates up with the barrel inside and if so then you should be fine.  To also second Borden, it might very well be swelled...but I doubt it.

Ok so upon further inspection and measuring with calipers and staring at the thing, I don't know what's wrong with it. The bulge seems to be machined into the choke and not a swelling as previously though. The inside shows no signs of any problem. All I know for sure is it does not screw in to the proper length. Side by side with my Kick's, Jellyhead, Undertaker and various other chokes they all seem the same. All others screw in easily and bottom out firmly. My new assumption is the threads are the problem. While I can't see anything screwed up it only engages the threads and screws half way in. It doesn't seat solidly rather it gets progressively tighter and the first time I put it in I had to use pliers to unscrew it because it had got locked into the threads from only hand tightening. So is there a way to chase the threads on this thing and see if that is the problem?

FYI this is a Mobil choke going into a AL391 Urika 12ga. The previously referenced SBEII was a buddy's that had a noticeable bubble in the barrel before the choke. I guess it would take a lot to swell this solid steel choke tube as opposed to the thin barrel. I think I jumped the gun on my assumption.

I have seen 2 SSX chokes that have swollen in the past 2 months both benelli mobil chokes.
