Dot type sights work very well for many people. You may want to look at one that offers a choice of red/green/blue and sometimes one reticle or another works well for a shooter.
There are also tubular and open type dot sights. There's really no advantage of one over the other, just a matter of preference.
There are basically 3 methods of attachment.
You can use a conventional base and the mount that takes the place of rings that normally come with most dot sights. If your gun (like most 870s) is not drilled and tapped, you'd need to have that done.
You can use a saddle mount, gun specific for your 870 or a dot sight that has a saddle mount integral with the dot sight (Truglo makes one for Remington shotguns like this) or you can purchase a saddle mount, like B-Square or others that fit your gun and choose a dot sight that you like.
Lastly, you could choose the Burris SpeedBead that incorporates a mount that goes between the receiver and the stock and has a dot sight that mounts on it.
All will work, some prefer one over the other but it's largely a matter of preference and economics.
