Im thinking about using a different tukey gun this year.Im getting tired of carrying a heavy model 1100 and 835.Will a mossy 500  20 gauge work with lead 6s @ 40 yards.what choke for lead.

You could probably find something that would work. Takes time and money to find the right combo. Good luck

I really cant speak for the Mossy, but a 20 is a great 40 yard gun with the right choke and shell. It is trial and error thing. Im shooting a Benelli Nova with.555 Indian Creek choke and Nitro 7s.and it is a real head knocker out to 40.

Yes it will cleanly harvest a gobbler out to 40yds. My main Turkey gun is a 2000 Mossberg® Mdl 500C 20ga with a 26" barrel. I use a Wrights® SWARM™ .555" choke and Winchester® Supreme™ 20ga 3" Mag #4Pb  ammunition. I also use a Hastings® .570" Extended Choke with Remington® Nitro Turkey 20ga 3" Mag #5Pb ammo. Because you have chosen to use #6 shot you will have a denser pattern than what I can do.

With lead it is a few and far between to be a slam dunk 40 yd gun . 30 yd  all day long .35 yard - yeah in several combinations.

Mossy 20 try 560-562 . Lead 7.5s at 30 yds are pretty awesome in tighter chokes.

If you can find some lead 6's and a choke that likes them, you can sure have a 40 yard 20 gauge.  Thing is, with most manufacturers only making the pb loads in #5 or #4, that task is harder to accomplish than some guys are willing to try.  I have an 870 that'll put right about 100-110/10" at 40, but it is with the older Federal Premium #6's that use the Triple-plus wad and NOT the Flight Control wad.

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind te most.

Thanks for all the info.I carried a H&R fixed Full choke   12 for a number of years .It was barely a 40 yard killer but i busted heads with it.It only weighed 4.5 pounds  so 3in mag was real interesting.I even shot a few 3.5s  not anymore. If i think i could do that well with a 20 gauge ,i think i almost got myself talked into it.

Winchester has a 3-1 1/4-#6 in a box of 25; Federal has the FCW #6 lead and at Rogers Sporting goods the older pre FC shell; Remington has 3"6s, as well as Kent, Fiocchi so it is not a shard to find shells as it is to get a tight shooting 40 yard 20 gauge using lead.
Usually 550 - 560 range chokes are going to be the best bet for that.

HTL loads certainly make a huge difference for the 20s on shots over 35 yards.

want you a combo that stops the gobblers dead in their tracks  ? Here's mine // mossy 500 using 3" hevishot .  no flopping around,, just a dead gobbler  40 yards and better. the hevi-shot for the 20 is a little steep but if your sights are on , one shell is all you need per bird. I'll have to check on the choke and red dot

I've had several 20ga model and makes, and i wouldnt shoot at a bird over 30 yards with any of them using lead. Now the 870 20 ga i currently hunt with and 3 in Fed HW's, i'll take it out to 40 easily with confidence.

With my 21" barreled 870 I would feel confident out to 40 yards with the SumToy choke and Winchester Lead 5's or 6's.

To answer your question directly, yes, properly choked it will. I have a Mossberg 500 with a 26" barrel. It's relatively light and exceptionally well balanced. It came drilled and tapped and I especially like the flat underside of the fore end. It just fits my hand properly.

I've shot a variety of shells through it and have loaned that gun to friends to use at shoots and hunts. They never want to give it up when I do that.

In looking for lead shot loads, I'd recommend that you consider the #6 shot lead shells and look at some of the loads made for pheasants. They are more widely available in larger payloads and #6 shot than are some of the "turkey" loads. You may also be able to find some of the older Federal turkey loads that had 1 5/8 oz. of #6 shot. These are the pre-Flitecontrol Wad shells. They do a good job.

Of course tungsten-based shot shells like Hevi-13 or Federal Heavyweight #7s will do a much better job than any of the lead shells.

Like many others, I use the SSX turkey choke in my 20 gauge 500 and it seems to work well with any of those shells.

Thanks,
Clark

1 5/8oz would be a 12ga load I believe. Don't you mean a 1 5/16oz load of Pb in Federal® FCW or the Winchester® Supreme™?

I bought a mossberg 500 in 20 gauge 26 inch barrel. So far i used two differnt chokes with lead.I used a undertaker first with Remington 3 inch  #6s  1 1/4 oz. 50 pellets in a sheet of notebook paper.I then used a gobble stopper .565  with same shells  with 70  to 90 pellets in notebook paper. That matches some patterns my 835 shot with 3 in  1 7/8.Both test were @ 38 yards.I think i got what i want.I really like this gun.

SumToy

The 20 is a good little gun.  Now it is VERY shell depended. I would go with the HTL loads if not look into the Federal FCW lead.
