Should I try decoys?

Well the youth season starts here in mississippi this weekend. My friend is bringing his little boy to the house to try and get his first turkey. Gonna be a challenge, a I have a torn achilles tendon and am on crutches and a knee high boot. I am wondering if it is to early to try and decoy birds. I have never hunted this early and have no idea. I just want to give him the best chance at killing a bird. Got my blind where I can get to it pretty easy without busting my butt. Its just off a logging road that is tore up with turkey sign. what do yall think, decoys or no decoys?

if you were hunting in field i would say yes but if you are hunting in the woods i'd say no

I'm in MS and I wouldn't be against using a hen and a jake possibly.  I don't like using my strutter decoy this early in the year.  But I think a decoy like a hen couldn't hurt, and could take the birds attention off the youth and on the deke.

I use a single hen decoy a lot in an open field and had alot of success with it.

if possible use one strutting gobbler. i have had alot of sucess early in the year with them. it will also bring the bird as close as possible for that kid to pop em

I think blinds and decoys go together like peanut butter and jelly


I don't use demes much because I'm a run n gunner but in a blind I want a decoy so they come to me because I don't have the mobility to go to them.

Hen. Two hens. Jake or strutter? It's all up to you what worked in the past that you have confiedence in and what decoys you have

A jake and hen has always worked good for me most any time during the season.

Like some of the rest i would say yes ...a hen and jake would be ok i think but don't know about the strutting gobbler decoy.......don't know what part of the state you in but we suppose to have a lot of rain today and Saturday possible up to 2 inches.

Look at some of the pictures and comments some members are posting of winter flocks with a struter or two in the mix.

If its a field I would set up a decoy or two, a turkey a lot of times wont come in in a field unless he sees a turkey.

In the woods its a little harder to see so he'll go a little farther to try and find that sexy hen.
