ive been shooting a kicks for a few years with good results in a 870 21". Are the IC chokes worth the money for the difference if any?

nyhunter

my 870 and kicks .655 out shot the I.C with lead but the I.C .665 did better with the H-13 and win. xtended range. But the jelly head .660 out shot both of those with lead and H-13 and win. xtend range. The hevi shot turkey choke does very well also. I think the Kicks would hold its own if it were a .660 or .665.

mines a .660 kicks and does pretty good.

Ive shot Kicks for years and love them, no other choke I bought could out shoot them with lead. I bought an Indian creek and it does. I only shoot winchester when shooting lead. It also out patterns the Kicks with Extended range 5 and 6s.

My thing is. If your happy with it why change. Its and awesome choke. take the 8- bucks and buy you two boxes of winchester extended ranges.

For me the IC .675 shoots Win XR much tighter than Kicks .670 or .680 out of a 24" 835.  Kicks is no slouch, it throws a very even pattern.  but I feel the IC is a much better down range choke.  It is scarry tight inside 20 yards though.  I would not use an IC on a gun with bead sights for that reason.  The Kicks is a better choke for inside 20 yards.

3" 870 Shell Shucker

I have a .665 Indian Creek and a .665 Gobblin' Thunder for my 3" 870 with 28" Barrel.

The Indian Creek beats the Gobblin' Thunder with every shell I've tried.

I recently purchased a .650 Gobblin' Thunder for the same 870.  I patterned several different Low Brass loads through it, and then I tried the .665 Indian Creek with the same loads.

The .665 Indian Creek "always" throws a tighter core than either a .650 or .665 Gobblin' Thunder, with all Lead and HTL loads I've patterned.  The IC "always" wins the tight pattern contest.  Now, is tighter always better?  Maybe, maybe not.  It depends.

You won't know until you try one, but even if the I.C. choke is better, the Kicks will probably kill the birds just as dead 99.99% of the time.

They both make very good chokes.  Don't know if Charlie Boswell ever lifted his recommedation of not shooting Hevi-13 loads through them though, but I know a lot of people do with no problems.  Kicks makes a very thick choke.

I had a .669 Indian Creek BDS choke for my 870.  It shot the best in my 28" barrel.  I tried a .665 and didn't like it.  Took it back and tried a .655.  It did a lot better, but I wanted to try a more open choke, so I tried the .669 they had and wow.  I thought I would try 1 more and went to a .675 choke, but I took it back and kept the .669.  Stuart and Mike are both great guys.  And they do stand behind what they sell.  I have the utmost respect for both of them.

I also shoot a MAD .675 Super Max choke which was made by Indian Creek.  It shoots extremely well with good Hevi-13 shells.  I'll add that a lot of times just because a certain brand choke don't seem to do as well is due to the inconsistency of the Hevi-13 loads.  I know firsthand how some will shoot simply awesome patterns from a particular box(lot #) and another box(different lot #) will shoot a lot worse.

They say you can shoot extended range and one type of Nitro. They stil advise against TSS and Hevi

For what gun and load???

Skeeterbait

Two years ago I tested a Kicks .670, 680, and IC 675 head to head, same day, same gun, same shells.  Gun is a Mossberg 835 with 24 inch barrel.  Shells are Winchester Xtended Range 3.5" #6.  Of the Kicks chokes the .670 was the best and put counts in the 180's inside a 10 inch circle at a lasered 40 yards.  The IC put counts in the 220's.  All three gave good even patterns.  The Kicks chokes gave good even distribution out to a 16 inch circle. The IC was pretty thin outside the 10 ring.  Here is a pic of one of the IC patterns.
