I shoot several 870s and they do have a pretty good kick.The new SuperCell factory installed pad is a good one and if yours has that pad, you're ahead of the game. The older ones don't do much to help and really harden as time goes by until they're more like bricks. There are several slip on pads that work (I like Shooter's Friend) but whatever you choose, I'd sure recommend that you use one, especially at the bench with those 3.5" or even 3" loads.Thanks,Clark
