Wondering...Thoughts about safety in Campeche, Mexico in pursuit of ocellated...Anybody been? Anybody going? Is it too dangerous?

slamman

who did you book with?  i just finished my World Slam this past March in Campeche had a great time no problems at all so book your hunt and good luck.

I went down there on a bow hunt for Ocellated in February of 2010 with not a single hick-up and never once feared for my safety...
I arrived early evening on Saturday and stayed at the Best Western along the coast of Campeche.

The Mexican Mardi Gras had started and after settling in my room for a bit I ventured out to the streets where the parade was taking place.  It was packed with people having fun!  I had already did some currency exchange before leaving so I had peso's to purchase Las Cervesas (beer).
I walked up and down the strip buying beer out of iced down wash tubs and sampled many different foods while listening to various bands playing.  Although I never understood a word anyone said there were some that would stare and some that would smile & wave as I made my way up down the streets.

The bow hunting was great in February with plenty of birds and I had a great time.  I would not be afraid to go back at all, just can not afford to do it again!  Stayed at the Holiday Inn on my return night before leaving and highly recommend it as there is a great little restaurant just across the street that sits on the ocean front.
Here are a couple of videos I put together from the trip.... PM me if you want with any questions...

Booked with BalamMexico...Alfredo Lamadrid is my contact. Seems like a nice guy and assures it's absolutely safe but reading U.S. state dept. warnings makes me somewhat uneasy. No warnings directly citing Campeche but there are warnings against night travel, remote area travel in all of Mexico...I sure would like to go (and have already invested a fair amount on a deposit for this past spring) but a turkey isn't worth giving up my head  :help:

PM GSLAM95 (John) he gave me a lot of great info before I went.  I was down there March of 2012 and never had any feelings I was in danger all the Mexican people I was in contact with were very helpful and grateful.  Have fun kill a bird and let me know how you did.

Nice vids...Man, that's some accomplishment with a bow!
The area I booked is jungle so I'm going to say it's not the same outfitter or area. Like I said in previous post, I REALLY want to go but I'm hesitant...

sixbird

Thanks guys...I'm going to give it some serious thought and try to come up with some ways of getting independent info. (like here)...I'm really on the fence...

GSLAM95

There are many booking agents.....Who is the outfitter?

I know of reputable outfitters that offer both deep jungle and jungle/crop land hunts.  I chose the crop fields because most of the deep jungle hunts are birds shot out of the trees while on roost and that just isn't my cup of tea..

You will find that these birds will not decoy, therefore patterning their daily routine of habits is a necessity..

I booked with Balammexico and purposely decided on deep jungle mainly for the experience...I'm guessing there won't be deep jungle in the not too distant future. I'm not a fan of shooting off roost myself but weighing the experience against the method, I decided to go with the experience. Maybe I'll get lucky and get one on the ground...Not questioning your method, not by any means, please don't read that into my response...
So...My question is more related to safety than outfitter/method...This outfitter had Colorado Buck and Jim Shockey in his camp so I'm not real concerned about his operation. I'm more concerned about if I'll become the subject of a kidnapping story! :o

Jim Shockey?  I would be more concerned that it is a canned hunt then getting kidnapped!

Not to be contentious but my query is for safety...I'm concerned about safety...I've researched the outfitter, talked to previous clients...It IS a fair chase hunt. It IS in the jungle (which is what I wish). And I'm confident that it will be an adventure...I just don't want to find myself the target of kidnappers or murderers...If you've been there, I'd welcome your comments and any advice you could give...Thanks for all the input...
