Just wanted to see if anybody knows any general areas where you think we should start hunting for some birds. Got some maps and been studying them but there is so much land I dont know where to begin. Maybe just some tips for areas to avoid. I was thinking about starting below Spearfish on some back roads and just wing it. Thanks for any help.

I hunted there last year, and I wish I could be more help for you.  We never really got into good birds.  The spring was really late out there last year, and birds were all herded up in cattle pastures and feed lots, and hadnt really moved up into the hills at all yet.  We stayed mostly in the southern hills, down by custer and hot springs.  There was definitely no shortage of birds, they were just all herded up.. This year should be much better for you.

Im not sure which maps you have, but the national geographic maps with the topo lines, all the public and private properties, and every little road and trail were a huge lifesaver for us..

Heres a couple pics for you to get you excited (if you arent already)..
