After reading about using a semi-strut jake decoy on Old Gobbler I bought a Jake Moblile and made a real jake fan for it. The Kansas opener was yesterday and I scouted a new piece of ground I got this season the evening before
and saw 2 or 3 toms and 4 or 5 hens heading to the corner of an L shaped cornfield with woods on one side and a creek with trees on the other. I was sure they were going to roost within a few yards of that corner. I got in there about 5:45 am, came down the tree line on the woods out of site of the roost area and set up Jake Mobile about 20 yards out in front of me looking directly at me. I estimated I was about 80 yards from the roost. Two gobblers starting in gobbling their heads off about 6:30 and I knew I was in the right spot. From hunting in youth season with grandsons I knew they would probably fly down around 7:00 am , so at 6:50 I made a couple of soft yelps to get their attention. Then waited 10 minutes , a couple more yelps...all answered by both gobblers. At about 7:03 a big gobbler flew down about 40 yards to my right and a few seconds later the second one. When they landed they immediately turned to look at the Jake Mobile decoy and were looking and coming right where I was sitting. I called once more softly to get them in to about 30 yards and clear a branch that was in my line of sight. I picked the biggest one which had flown down first and introduced him to a 3. 5" Hevi 13 # 7' from my Mossy 835/Star Dot combo. It's great when a plan comes together flawlessly! He was not huge, 19 lbs, but had a nice 10 1/4" beard and 1" curved sharp spurs.
