A couple of weeks ago I heard the parable of the vineyard owner who hired workers throughout the day, then payed them all the same atParable of the Vineyard Workers
Matthew 20:1-16 -New Living Translation
1 "For the Kingdom of Heaven is like the landowner who went out early one morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay the normal daily wage and sent them out to work.
3 "At nine o'clock in the morning he was passing through the marketplace and saw some people standing around doing nothing. 4 So he hired them, telling them he would pay them whatever was right at the end of the day. 5 So they went to work in the vineyard. At noon and again at three o'clock he did the same thing.
6 "At five o'clock that afternoon he was in town again and saw some more people standing around. He asked them, 'Why haven't you been working today?'
7 "They replied, 'Because no one hired us.'
"The landowner told them, 'Then go out and join the others in my vineyard.'
8 "That evening he told the foreman to call the workers in and pay them, beginning with the last workers first. 9 When those hired at five o'clock were paid, each received a full day's wage. 10 When those hired first came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a day's wage. 11 When they received their pay, they protested to the owner, 12 'Those people worked only one hour, and yet you've paid them just as much as you paid us who worked all day in the scorching heat.'
13 "He answered one of them, 'Friend, I haven't been unfair! Didn't you agree to work all day for the usual wage? 14 Take your money and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you. 15 Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?'
16 "So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last."

This story took on new light as I listened to a message Saturday on the radio... a message that is very familiar, but until Saturday seemed so unrelated. You be the judge...
Luke 23:32-43 New Living Translation
32 Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. 33 When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.
34 Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing." And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
35 The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. "He saved others," they said, "let him save himself if he is really God's Messiah, the Chosen One." 36 The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. 37 They called out to him, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" 38 A sign was fastened above him with these words: "This is the King of the Jews."
39 One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, "So you're the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you're at it!"
40 But the other criminal protested, "Don't you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? 41 We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn't done anything wrong." 42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom."
43 And Jesus replied, "I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise."
Re-read the blue passages and see if you get the connection. Shortly before his arrest, Jesus had told a parable about a man who would spend only a short time under the hire of the master, but would receive full benefits. Only days later, he hung on a cross between two men convicted of crimes serious enough to be killed by the most tortuous method known to man. One man hurled insults, the other recognized the innocence AND the authority of Jesus. Just like the worker hired late in the afternoon, Jesus granted to this repentant thief - literally hanging at death's door - the full benefit of the Kingdom of God. Again, there are many other lessons and comparisons that could be made in the 2 passages, but lets look at one more passage that brings this lesson full circle... prophesied by Isaiah hundreds of years earlier...
Isaiah 55:6-7 New International Version
6 Seek the LORD while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
7 Let the wicked forsake their ways
and the unrighteous their thoughts.
Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
Regardless of what you have done in your past, God is willing and ready to dismiss the charges and give you full benefits under his eternal retirement plan.
