hevi VS fed HW

Let me see if I have this correct..... The hevi 3" loads are 2oz and shoot at 1090fps. Where as the federal hw are only 1-5/8oz but shoot 1300 fps. Therefore, with the hevi 13's you are gaining more pellets, but less velocity. Where as with the federal you lose some pellets but game velocity.

My question now (if I am correct above) is it worth to give up pay load to shoot something that is faster and weighs heavier (12 VS 15 gcc)? The hevi 7's shoot great out of my M1 benelli and SSX. Just curious if it is even worth the money to try the fed hw or just stick to the hevi 7's.

If you can figure out the flight control wad I would switch in a heart beat. I have not seen a pattern from the federals that put up the numbers h13 does however.

I actually improved my pattern switching from hevi to the federal out of my 20ga. It will be tough to beat my 12ga 3" pattern with hevi 7's though. At a true 38-39 yards (butt was at 40) I was putting up 300+. Even if I could get 250 with the fed 7's I would switch only because they are heavier.

That pretty well sums it up for me as well.

The Fed Heavyweight 3" load is 1 and 5/8 oz.  The 3.5" load is 1 and 7/8oz.

A friend and I patterned both this past weekend. We also did some penetration tests to see if the more dense pellets made a big difference.  After our pattern and penetration tests i can say that if I had a better choke to shoot the Fed. hwt, I would be shooting those instead of the H13.  We patterned the H13 3.5 2.25 oz of #6, #7 & Mag blends and Fed. Hwt. 3.5 1.75 oz. #7.  Through the .665 Jellyhead the H13 put up very impressive patterns at all ranges with very dense cores but a fair number of fliers.  Looking at the shot we recovered it was easy to see the cause.  The H13 is not a very uniform shot. The sizes in the #7 ranged from about #6 to #12. Some of the shot is doubled or tripled (2 or more pellets stuck together) others had sharp edges and others looked like they had mickey mouse ears.  Not surprisingly, some pellets penetrated very well others not so much. The numbers in a 10" circle at 40 yds. # 6 158-178, #7 237-266  and Mag. Blend 161-170.

Now for the Fed Hwt.  These were patterned through the Remington .670 non-ported factory x-full turkey choke. The federal patterns were very even well distributed patterns, but not nearly as dense as the H13.  The recovered shot was perfectly sized and was zinc or nickel plated.  The penetration was very impressive being greater than the #6 H13 pellets.  Numbers put up by this load at 40 yds. was 108-110 in the 10" with 95% within a 20" circle.  This shell choke combo needs some work.  I think it would benefit from a tighter choke I plan to try something in the .650 range. :OGturkeyhead:

If it aint broke dont fix it.

Ive burned up a lot of money this pre season trying to figure out these federals. I want to shoot the federals so Im sticking with them, but will say the Hevi 7s are consistant.

Basically.............if I keep my shots to 40-45 yards the Hevi 7's will do the job? I say 45 just incase I misjudge. I posted this before, but here is a pic of  h-13 7's that I shot at a lasered 40 yards (the end of barrel would have been about 38.5-39). I don't think I would come close to this with the feds just because of the payload. Thoughts?

You should be good as gold!
