Is lengthening forcing cone really worth the time and trouble?

How many on here has lengthen the forcing cone? Was cleaning gun today for the weekend opener here this weekend. Read where factory forcing cone is generally less than 1 inch. My Beretta looks to be more like 1/8" but if you used a 3" shell it appears that the crimp portion would open in the taper. Shoots pretty good patterns. So is it really worth having done?

Are you happy with the patterns you are gating now?  If so then probably not.  I my self wouldn't have it done unless I was using lead.  I have it done on two 870s and it helped them shoot lead much better,  but with htl I don't think you would need it, infact I have heard some folks discourage it with htl.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Rob roberts custom gun works recommends it and works on all types of shotguns.  They improved both my guns patterns via forcing cone work and polishing.
By the way one was an "Xtrema2" and the other "SBE2"

First heard of it while looking @ Rhino Chokes, then SumToy with just a $35 price tag, sounds like a good deal. Looked for the first time today at the taper. I could see if I shot 2 3/4 shell in my gun it could impact shots, not so sure it would with the 3". That's why I wanted to hear from others. To be honest I 'am at the age where you used to get your gun and  lead loaded shells and go to the woods and that was all there was to a good hunt. Add a buddy too in there! As far as patterns I have never missed anything not counting wing shooting or clays :toothy12:

Ok why do you want to do it?    Does the gun need it?    Well if recoil is a problem it will help.  With lead it helps the pattern.  HTL it also helps BUT a lot of times you will need to choke the gun with different choke.

I will not feed you a line to sale to you.  If it works leave it alone this late in the year.  That can turn into a test a tune deal.   :anim_25:

No I don't think its absolutely necessary. I may run into problem with a 2 3/4" shell, but never buy them. It will kill Turkey's. But I hear it will improve the patterns like 15% and that could translate into more humane kills. That was the purpose of the thread to see if others are doing this pretty regular. I did get a good deal on some Hevi 13 3" 1 5/8 loads and the patterns are less dense than the 2 oz loads. I wouldn't shoot no more than 35 yrds with them. I saw your price and I 'am in Georgia and so are you. So I was trying to get some insight.

I sent my barrel and my hunting buddy's barrel off and had it done. Both 870SMs. His with a 23" and mine a 24". It took some of the holes out of the patterns with both guns. We thought it was well worth the $35 per barrel for better patterns. Btw, we both shoot Hevi 6's 3.5".
