After not hearing a thing on the limb, I picked a little opening between the swamp and a big field and setup. Did some soft calling to no avail. After 30 minutes, I decided to move closer to where I heard the bird heading to roost yesterday evening and stumbled upon an area that looked like a herd of 100 turkeys had been scratching and fresh. In the process of setting up my Avian X Jake and hens, a neighbor shot and a turkey gobbled but a looong ways off. Then a crow hit and another turkey gobbled closer, so I cut him off with some cuts and fast yelping and he answered me back. I hustled to find a tree and the game was on. I only did some soft purring and clucking and soft yelping except when the turkeys gobbled. After most gobbles, I cut them off cutting at them and yelping. This was driving them nuts. When they finally showed, there were 3 of them and I smacked 2 of them with one shot. The strutter and one of his buddies. The third one stuck around and begged me to shoot him, but the 2 birds a day limit was holding me back. I bet he will be huntable in a couple of days cause he is going to be lonely for his gobbler buddies.
These are my first SC gobblers. I lived in Bluffton from 4th grade through 10th grade and didn't hunt. Then moved to Alabama and started hunting when I was in College. I turkey hunted in SC a couple of times when visiting, but nothing serious. Now that i am 40 and back in Bluffton I was able to get it done and add SC to my list for my USA slam!
Since I was hunting by myself this morning, I had to take the pictures, so there aren't any of me with the birds, but you get the idea. Both birds were good 3 year olds with solid 10 in beards and inch spurs. The third one looked to be the same. Hope to find out in a few days.
Avian X decoys along with my TBCalls signature mouth call and TBCalls purrfection crystal were more than these old boys could handle!
Safe and Happy Hunting!
