Looking for a new turkey gun/sight combo. Need some help.

Hey all,

I am getting ready to trade a rifle in so that i can get me a good turkey gun.  My budget is about $550 for the whole setup.  I've been doing some research and looks like the Mossberg 835 and Binelli Nova seems to be in the range i am looking for but may want to get a scope/sight for it as well.  I may be able to find a supernova for cheap as well.  Would really like to have a thumbhole or pistol grip stock as well.


So, my question is what would be the best combo in your opinions for what turkey gun to get?  Should i just go all out and spend the whole budget on the gun and then add the sight/scope in the coming years or just get both now?

I see also that people like the rem. 870 as well.  Any opinions are welcome.  Thanks.

In my opinion , the Remington would be the choice out of those 3 mentioned. The Nova is a low-end benelli and doesn't compare to the good modles that perform so well . And Mossberg quality is very low these days . If you take the action apart ona Mossberg and a remington , it is easy to see how the parts are made much differently . Much higher quality in the Remington .  A Remington 870 is the last pump-gun you'll ever need . I sported the sps turkey model for many years until I switched to an 11-87 . That gun brought home turkey dinner consistently and never misfired or failed to properly eject a shell . I would suggest buying that gun and putting Tru-Glo fiber optic sights on it . They cost about $20 and every Remington I've put them on needed no adjustment to have a centered pattern .  The open sights perform excellent and wont get bumped off or fog up when ya need them !!

All 3 are good guns. I own them all and they all shoot well. I'd choose whichever fits your budget and feels best to you. You may never need a sight if your gun shoots to point of aim.

I'd invest in some 3" Hevi-13 shothells with 2 oz. of #6 or #7 shot and an after-market turkey choke, plus a box of inexpensive 2.75" shells to use for initial patterning.

I'd recommend that whichever gun you choose, before you take it to the range, that you deep clean the bore and pull the trigger group to clean it of any excess grease or oil.

I'd spend a little time at the range to see how it shoots and then get ready to have some fun in the turkey woods.

I don't think you'd go wrong with either gun. It's all really a matter of choice and what feels best to each individual.
