Pot Call Surfaces

I have not yet made an attempt at making a pot call, my limited woodworking skills and more important my limited budget are a hinderance, but someday....
However, I have noticed in my somewhat limited observations that friction call surfaces have changed over the years.  Now I will admit for a long time I thought the big box stores and big mail order catalogs carried all the turkey calls manufactured in the world, and had no idea what was out there.  Anyway, as I began to discover what I was missing in the real world of turkey callers  I didn't see the same surfaces, I'm not saying they weren't made, I simply didin't see them.  For example, I had a Knight and Hale Ol' Yeller.  Which at the time I thoght was a pretty good caller.  That was 15 years ago, its seems that only now is the similar ceramic surface becoming popular with the custom / not mass produced call makers.  I also had a Black Mamba by Preston Pittman which had what I think was a carbon fiber surface, which I have never seen again.  Does that mean its a terrible surface, not available, too hard to work with, etc? Or has the custom crowd not tackled it yet.  Again I know I have not seen half of whats out there, just my observations and questions,  and I apologize for rambling!! What do you think?

Im still new to call making myself sooooo .. im not gonna be alot of help to you. I too have an Ol Yella sitting on a shelf in my turkey room. I dont" think " its ceramic although maybe has some similar qualities. As for call surfaces used by call makers like you said its pretty amazing to see what all is truly available to use. You have come to the right place to get your ?'s answered though. Jason

Ceramic was kind of monopolized with K&H and Primos for years. It has just become available to us over the last 2-3 years. As far as carbon fiber as a surface, I've never seen that before so that's a new one on me. There are surfaces out there that I've seen like sliced quarts and other rocks that work really well from what I've seen but are not very popular.
