Anyone shoot an O/U for turkeys??

Hey folks,
I shoot an 870 Wingmaster for turkeys, and I've purchased a variety of aftermarket tubes that will make it shoot like a rifle.  However, it would be really nice to have a more open choke available for shots at close range, when it would be very possible to send a pattern the size of a pop can past a gobbler's head without drawing blood.
Does anyone shoot an O/U for a turkey gun?  Do aftermarket tubes come readily available?

Hey Greg,

Yes, some folks shoot O/U and SxS for turkeys. The usual idea is to have a couple of different chokes for different distances, like you've discussed. That can work if you have 2 triggers or selective triggers and...the big and, if your gun shoots to the same point of aim with both barrels.

Some guns will allow the installation of 2 extended chokes and some won't so that's another consideration.

Lastly, while the idea sounds good, for most people I know, they end up putting 2 good long distance chokes in their gun. A well designed choke tube won't shoot those baseball sized patterns at 20-25 yards, just one with a denser core pattern but still a good fringe pattern.

Shot my first turkey with an Antonio Gardone over n under years ago before I bought my 835 mossy. Shot it with #4 duck & pheasant load.

I'm with you on this too.  I've been wanting a cynergy for like 6 years but I just can't justify spending that kind of money for a turkey gun.

I have always wanted a good o/u shotgun for turkey hunting,I think they would make the perfect turkey gun

For the past 12 years I have shot my citori satin hunter 3.5" O/U.

I started with lead XX 3.5" 2.25oz #5 lead in both brls and killed birds.

Then #5 fed HW killed one. Way overpenatration!

For last 5-6 years I have used #7 fed HW and trk choke for in one brl. Then a variety of loads in other brl. #6 Win sup 3.5" 1.75oz with full choke for close birds. Then last year I used a mod choke and handloaded 2 58oz 3.5" 7.5 lead in "close brl".

It was nice to have the ability to change chokes and loads for different situations with the flick of the safety button.

I owned a 2 O/U until last year.  After the Citori wouldn't fire when I had 2 toms at 20 yards in front of me.  Not sure what happened.  It just woldn't fire for some reason.  I even opened and closed the action again while the turkeys where standing there and tried i agian and nothing.  That was the last time I carried an O/U hunting.  I sold both of them after that.  Neither guns had both barrels with the same POA.  But they where close enough.  I'll stick with my Benelli's from now on.

Look at the Tri Star Hunter Mag It has a 3 1/2" chamber, and has a great looking camo finish! Oh yeah, american made and affordable Well as american as possible i guess

I shoot a brownong citori 3 inch that has been polished, ported with rhino turkey choke on top barrel and modified rhino choke on bottom that way i canshoot em far or close.  really awesome turkey gun.  Joe Morales at rhino did all the work on the gun and its unbeleivable what patterns I get out of the 3 inch shells.

I have a Cynergy in 20 and 28 and can tell you that they are great guns. I can't say I like the looks of the recoil pad and stock set up but they sure shoot good.

Mine's a Red Label that I had dipped. Just use the Ruger full and extra full chokes. I really like it.

I began to have failure to fire on the bottom brl (which had about 70% of that total number of shots)of my citori after 10 years and approx. 10K rounds.

I called browning in Arnold MO and ordered 2 new firing pins, main springs(firing pin springs), and a firing pin return spring.  It was about 25$ and I did the installation in about 30 min by myself.  You also MUST take the firing pins out every so often and CLEAN the pins and MOST IMPORTANTLY the firing pin holes.  ANY trash in these holes will cause problems with weak primer strikes.

Yes, the load I mentioned was a 2 5/8oz load of 7.5 lead(wildcat load).  With a VERY open choke it will put 100+ hits in the 10" circle and is awsome for those close shots.  That is the beauty of the O/U.  two different chokes/load available with the flick of a switch.
