Ok, I have another question.   But I'm going to suffer through it and not ask it.

You sound like my wife
I'm sure she has the looks to get away with asking questions.  Me, I catch a bunch of crap for it.  And I'm only trying to improve as a turkey hunter.

How are you ever gonna write the chapter on "rifle hunting, out of a blind, over bait and decoys, under a roost"if you don't ask?

I figured all that out by watching tv.

Ok, red pill day.

I hear all kinds of terms thrown out there that confuse me.   Here are a couple.  Answer any and all that you can.

Veteran - At what point is one considered a veteran?  Is it the number of years of experience, kills, hunts or what?

Don't call to loud - Whats considered to loud.

Get close but not to close - Whats close enough and whats to close?

You have to know what to say and when to say it - What do you say and when?

Ok, I'm done until I get these figured out.

I'm glad you asked.

You are considered a veteran when you know the answers below.

Calling too loud only applies to those non veterans who do not sound like a turkey. If you sound like a turkey, you are not calling too loud. If you don't sound like a turkey, and there is any chance a turkey may hear you, you are calling too loud. It is what veterans tell beginners because it is rude to say your calling stinks, be quiet and he may walk by you!

Close enough is when the gobbler can hear your softest clucks and purrs. Too close is when you can hear him putting as he flies off. Again, this is intuitively obvious to veterans.

What to say? I am Carrie Underwood's cougarriffic slutty sister. In turkey language this sounds just like the squealing hen. When to say it? Obviously, you want to communicate this info when you are close enough but not too close.

I have always considered a veteran as someone whose killed 30+ gobblers. Or any number that includes 1 called in, during spring and killed with a bow. That's IMO though....

The bow thing might not be enough but I always figgered "any ol' indian can kill one with a gun, but it takes a chief to kill one with a bow." Not sure who to give credit for that saying but it's true for me, the dang things are hard to kill with a bow. Only one I ever shot with a bow flew from Middle TN plum over the Smoky Mountains with my arrow hangin' outta him.
