Question about wood

What thickness of wood do you prefer to work with when making box calls?
How about pot calls?
I may have some to sell or trade.

For boxes I use 2-3/4 sq. x12" and for pots I use 1"x4"x25" and plain it down to what I need.

Yes, 4/4 is one inch thick

When I have wood sawn, I like it to be a bit over 1" thick to allow for drying.  That said, if you have wood sawn 5/4, most sawmills will charge you at an 8/4 rate.  I found that out the hard way.  I protested that I wasn't getting the other 3/4" of wood I was paying for.  The sawmill owner said this was standard practice.  I called another sawmill owner in another state to ask for his input.  He confirmed that anything over 4/4 but not over 8/4 is charged for 8/4 rate.  Sounds like the way our government conducts business...

That's interesting, up here we pay for what we get, at least at the mills I buy from. If you want 8/4 or 6/4 or 4/4 it's a difference price for each.

Barry, I use 4/4 also and 3/4 for a slimmer call which I prefer for pot calls.

The prices I got were when I supplied the log.  The 2 mills I contacted were in AR and OK.  It sounded fishy to me, but the guy I call to confirm the questionable practice is someone I have bought a good bit of wood from and trust as for input.  He was also in the timber industry in the Northwest (Oregon and California) for years. 

I would much rather have paid only for the actual board feet received.

To answer your question, I prefer 4/4 for pots and 8/4 for boxes. But the grain has to be aligned correctly for box call or I wont touch it

For boxes, I like to go with 8/4. That gives me enough to pull the box and lid out of one piece and the grain pattern and coloring will be uniform.

What type of wood are you talking about Barry?
