TRKYHTR

Here is my first 2 attemps at Trumpets. I learned alot after turning the first one but I guess I didn't learn enough. The second one almost made me cry. I was done with it. I was sanding the inside and then decided to drill the 5/8" hole a little further and the Trumpet cracked. I am having a hard time drilling the holes and finding the center to make sure the hole is perfectly in the center. It's also difficult to drill the holes straight. Any help would be appreciated. Here are a few pics.

With your great call making abilities I'm sure you will be making beautiful trumpets in no time flat.
Good luck with them ! Looking forward to seeing them.

Talk to Pappy he does the trumpets and I would bet he would give good sage advice.

would it be possible to drill the hole through the blank and then turn it?

that is the way I do it, this way it will center it self as long as you remember the largest diameter inside so you won't cut through.....Joe, I sure know what you're going through.....

Been there also.

Many wonder whats the mystic of the trumpet.

Its how to drill the right size, right length and of course a STRAIGHT long hole.
If that was easy trumpets would be a common turning ;D

Yes I drill first on the lathe.  Then it goes on a mandrel and away I go.

Keep trying you will find what works for ya.

1 thing that I found to help was to drill large and then step down.  I tried running the small bit through and increase the size but I failed alot.  If you got a straight small bore no problems but I found that the grain of the wood caused my small bit to directional bore even on the lathe.  Amazing the flex they have.
