Barrel Shifts

I have an new ols stock Rem 1187 SPS-T, 21" barrel (all black) and I noticed that even though the barrel is screwed down tight, I can still move the barrel side to side by holding the fore stock and twisting a little. Any thoughts or remedies?

Describe what you mean by tight.  Do you mean hand tight or do you mean hand tight where you put the butt of the gun on the ground, put all your weight on the barrel and then tighten the barrel nut as far as you can.  That's what I call "hand tight"  TIGHT, is when you take a piece of leather and a pair of channel locks and give that barrel nut that one last click, which you could NEVER do by hand.  I then put witness marks on the nut and the barrel ring so that whenever I break her down to clean, I can always put her right back where she was.

MJY- I guess I just mean hand-tight. Tight where the clicks stop, and I can't turn it anymore. I always thought the vicegrips method was a bit much, but maybe that's why my barrel moves around some.

Did the leather belt/channel locks trick and it worked like a charm. Got that one last click and the barrel is rock-solid. I was a little apprehensive about forcing it tighter with a tool, but you guys were right. I knew there was a reason I hang out with you guys  .  Thanks again..
